SUBSIDY FOR RELIEF
FLOODS IN MARLBOROUGH SUPPLYING STOCK FODDER (By Telegraph.—Press Association) BLENHEIM, Monday Under certain conditions the Government has agreed to subsidise donations toward flood relief on affected areas of the Wairau Plain at a rate of £1 for £1 up to £3OO, so that if the flood relief committee can raise £3OO by way of donations, £6OO will be available for relief purposes. This is regarded as the approximate sum necessary to supply fodder for stock until pastures can be rehabilitated. The immediate problem before the committee is to secure sufficient fodder to keep some 600 dairy cows on the flooded farms in production. The task has been simplified to some extent because of the luxuriant growth which followed the wet weather. Roadsides throughout the district, for instance, are carrying an enormous growth and local bodies and Government departments are combining in having as much of this cut as is possible before it becomes too rank. Since last Thursday a fleet of mowers has been busily engaged on the roadsides. Already tons of hay have been carted to farms where feed is badly required. Great assistance has been lent by Marlborough carriers, who have undertaken to transport xhe fodder free of charge.
The flood relief fund stood today at £l3l.
