GALLANT EXPLOIT
FORTIFIED ZONE ENTERED DENIAL BY GERMANY NEGOTIATION OF MINEFIELD (United Pres* Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Dec. 19, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 18 Not only did the Ursula penetrate a screen of destroyers, but she apparently entered a strongly fortified zone adjacent to Cuxhaven Harbour, south of the mouth of the Elbe and on the opposite side of the naval base of Brunsbuttel, which was the scene of the Royal Air Force’s first heroic attack on enemy naval forces on the second day of the war. It would be necessary to negotiate the minefields. A Berlin message states that it is officially denied that a British submarine sank a cruiser of the Konigsberg class, but admits the possibility of an underwater explosion. It is mentioned that a German war communique on December 14, reporting that a light cruiser had been slightly damaged, might have referred to demage by a British submarine.
