THE NAVAL ENCOUNTER
CASUALTIES OF THE EXETER HOSPITAL SHIP DESPATCHED (Omcial Wireless) RUGBY, Dec. 18 The Admiralty has issued the following statement:— The casualties on board H.M.S. Exeter in the severe and well-fought action of December 13 were:— Officers, killed five, wounded three; ratings, 56 killed, 20 wounded. Information - has been received from the British ambassador at Buenos Aires that he has made arrangements for a temporary hospital ship to be despatched to meet the Exeter. The party on board, which will be under the charge of Dr. Petty, Senior surgeon of the British hospital at Buenos Aires, consists of three doctors, a radiologist and twelve nurses. X-ray apparatus and a complete V.A.D. outfit will also be carried. The number of casualties on board H.M.S. Ajax are as follows:—Seven ratings killed, one seriously wounded, and four wounded NAVY LEAGUE MESSAGE The president of the New Zealand Navy League, Mr J. S. Ross, of Dunedin, sent the following message to the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones on Saturday:—“The New Zealand Navy League’s branches congratulate the officers and ship’s company of the Achilles on their gallant awUon in the South Atlantic.”
