AID FOR RIFLE CLUBS
BARRELS MAY BE PURCHASED Advice from the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, that at the outbreak of war it was found necessary to curtail the privileges given to defence rifle clubs, was received at a meeting of the Waipa County Council yesterday. The Minister said that at the present time a free issue of 100 rounds of ammunition was made to each club member who fired the classification course and qualified. Although the sale of rifles was suspended, the clubs might purchase barrels and attend to the necessary fitting themselves. Some disappointment was expressed by councillors at the Minister’s reply, Mr D. B. Livingstone describing as ridiculous the sanction of permitting clubs to purchase only barrels and not stocks. Those present at the meeting were: Messrs S. C. B. Macky (chairman), G. S. Clark, W. McGee, G. S. Hall, F. L. Onion, D. B. Livingstone, R. J. Graham, J. W. Garland, J. T. Johnson, E. F. Peacocke, T. Grant (clerk), and W. C. Macky (engineer).
