WAIPA CUP SUCCESS
OUR JEAN BRILLIANT DAY OF SURPRISES ERLICK AT LONG ODDS The Takanini trainer, F. Smith, continued his run of success when, at Te Awamutu on Saturday, he provided the winner of the Cup, Gladynev, and the winner of the following race, the Hack Cup, in the favourite Proud Fox, who, in a thrilling finish with Racecamp, got up in the last stride to beat the Te Rapa horse by a nose. Throughout, the racing was keenly contested but investors did not fare too successfully in that Proud Fox was the only favourite to win outright, although four finished in a place. Gladynev’s performance was a solid one and though the chances of the favourite, Balinavar, were not assisted through breaking through the tapes and careering riderless down the straight before being caught and taken back, the winner, nevertheless, won on his merits. The highlight of the day’s racing, however, was the outstanding performance of Our Jean in the sprint event, and to come from what appeared a hopeless position at the straight entrance to win as she did stamped her as a mare of genuine ability. Several good prices were returned on the win machine, the biggest being that of Erlick, in the last race, when he returned over two score. Biddy Girl and Trig Station, winners of the respective divisions of the Waipa Plate were bracketed on the machine and paid double figures, while the return of Hopalong and Gladynev approached double figures, practically the same as Valdene’s place price for second in the latter division of the Ohaupo Hack. The best place dividend was that of Brazen Bold in the open sprint, his return being a double-figure one.
The weather was fine, though overcast for the first half of the programme, but shortly after the fifth race heavy rain fell. The track was in splendid order.
