UNPAID TAXI FARES
NOW SPECIFIC OFFENCE RESULTS OF REGULATIONS Taxi drivers in Hamilton are findthat the 1939 Taxi Cab Regulations, which have recently been instituted, of considerable benefit to them in the matter of dealing with fares who are unwilling to pay. Clause 9 of the new provisions stipulates that it
shall be an offence for any person to hire a taxi and fail to pay the prescribed fare on the demand by the driver at the end of the journey. Previously persons who failed to nay a taxi fare were charged with obtaining credit by fraud. Now that it is held to be a specific offence, the laxi compainies have more control over offenders. Sinn the new regulations have , been in force, taxi companies, with i the assistance of the police, have in- ; variably been able to secure payj ment of the fare.
