FIRE BOARD HONOURS FOR BRIGADE (Special to Times) TE- AWAMUTU, Friday. The quarterly meeting of the Te Awamutu Fire Board was held last evening. Mr H. C. Rainey presided and there were also present Messrs W. J. North, C. J. spiers, the secretary, Mr u. O. Jourdaln, and the brigade superintendent, Mr H. J. Irwin. An application by the New Zealand Dairy Company for approval of a fire-alarm system installed in the Te Awamutu factories was granted subject to the superintendent’s inspection and approval. Mr North reported that the borough workmen had laid the mains in Albert Park for use by the brigade in practice and demonstrations. The superintendent reported that three calls had been received during the past three months and the outbreaks had been quickly controlled. The weekly practices j were well attended. I. Petersen had been enrolled as fireman and the brigade was at full strength. The following honours were due to members: Deputy-superintendent J. Dalton, 2 -year bar, with nine years’ service; Foreman L. w. Spence, 5-year medal; Hreman H. Maclean, 2-year medal, making seven J ears service; Fireman B. Clifford, 8-year certificate; and Fireman F. Sherley, 3-year certificate. The gear and equipment was In good order and the 300 feet or new hose had been placed oil the machine. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs H. Duncan and Burt, the Auckland members or the board. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS The primary and secondary schools hare closed lor holidays, and on the last days functions were held at each. At the High I School there was a large gathering of , pupils and parents last evening when a 1 musical programme and dancing were en- | joyed. Dance music was played by .\lis_Downey and Mr 11. \V. Wyllie. | At the primary school, the infant divi- 1 sion vva- entei iamed al a free picture show at the Empire Theatre. The chairman, Mr L. S. Armstrong, addressed the children after tiie screening and thanked Messrs E. 11. Cuckse.v, \Y C. Savlll and J. (i. B. Gifford and others for tlie.lr generosity in making it possible to give each child a Christmas girt. Yesterday afternoon was parents’ day at the High school and there was a good at- | tendance to view the display or arts and | crafts and physical drill. Jll thanking the pupils on behalf of the committee. .Mr Melrose said that the work done by them in Improving the ground-, was excellent. He urged them to recognise tiie worth and genuineness of thenteachers, who . were a very line lot. lie asked them all. teachers and pupils, to accept the best wishes of the committee for ' a nappy holiday. The headmaster, Mr \V. G. 5. Smith, 1 complimented the pupils on their work and
thanked Te Awamutu and district for the support given to the committee. He reminded the pupils of their obligations in the home and on the farm, and threw out in oi>en invitation to all parents to discus* it any time with him any problem whir* Affected the scholastic work or the children.
