MILK DELIVERY
AWARD FOR ROUNDSMEN SEVEN-DAY, 44-HOUR WEEK The first industrial award covering milk roundsmen in the Hamilton and Whangarei boroughs has been issued by the Arbitration Court. It provides for only one delivery of milk daily, with a minimum wage of £5 a week, which is to consist of 44 hours, which may be spread over seven days. The earliest time for starting work is 3 a.m. Hours worked in excess of 44 a week are to be paid for at the overtime rate of time and a-half for the first four hours and double time theieafter. For the purpose of collecting accounts the daily total of hours may be exceeded without payment of overtime. There is to be a paid annual holiday of 28 days. Learners are to be paid a minimum of 8s: a day for each day that they require the assistance of a teacher •while learning the milk round. The workers’ representative on the Court, Mr A. L. Monteith, dissented from the decision of the majority of members on the ground that, on account of such a big margin over the buying price, a six-day week, at least, in his opinion, should be worked.
