REPORT DENIED

CHINESE CHAIN STORES (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Friday A denial of the report from Christchurch that a Chinese syndicate had been formed in Auckland to establish a chain of 90 fruit ships tnroughout New Zealand was given today by Mr Andrew Chong, who is prominently associated with the Chinese fruit trade in AucKland. He said there was absolutely no truth in the report, and that the majority of Chinese operated their business activities independently. Referring to the reported influx of Chinese, Mr Chong stated: “Most of the refugees in New Zealand have been women and children, who have husbands and fathers here. Each has to be covered by a bond for £2OO, which is double the amount of the poll tax charged in the case of earlier arrivals. ”
