RATES FOR POSTAGE LETTERS AND POSTCARDS DATE OF SERVICE UNCERTAIN (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Interviewed in regard to a statement from the United States that the resumption of the Trans-Pacific air service might not be long delayed, the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, said that no definite information as to the likely date of commencement could be obtained from Pan American Airways in New Zealand. He announced, however, the following postage rates for letters:— To New Caledonia, Is each halfounce; Hawaii, 2s 6d each halfounce; .U.S.A., including internal air transit in the United States, 4s each half-ounce; Great Britain and Europe, via U.S.A., 7s 3d each halfounce. Postcards:—Half the above charges In view of the possibility that the first mail might be at short notice, he recommends early preparation for the post. All letters on the first flight will be distinctively marked. Letters in other than English should be posted well in advance of the advertised closing time. There was no definite provision for the forwarding of letters to Canton Island, but the Minister was hopeful that the Post Office would be able to make a suitable arrangement in regard to this point.
