Soldiers’ Club Closed The soldiers’ club which has been conducted for troops on leave, at the Bledisloe Hall, Hamilton, will bo closed during the period of the special Christmas leave. The club will reopen on January 13. Malt Extract Industry ,
The manufacture of malt extract is declared to be a licensed industry under the Industrial Efficiency Act by a notice published in the Gazette last night. The blending of malt extract with medicinal or other substances is not affected by the notice. Wage Increase Refused The Government of South Africa has declined a request by trades Unions for an automatic increase in all wages to offset the rising cost of living. It is stated that a wages increase would start an upward spiral of living costs. Soldier Golfers Soldiers serving with His Majesty’s Forces in New Zealand have been granted permission to use the St. Andrews golf links free of fees. At the annual meeting of the Hamilton Golf Club last night it was decided to sustain the membership of club members who serve with the forces. Golf Championships The president of the Hamilton Golf Club, Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., stated at the annual meeting of the club last night that permission had been granted to the Hamilton Ladies’ Club to use the St. Andrews links for the New Zealand women’s championships next season. School Garden Fete The Waikato Diocesan School for Girls v/ill not have a prize-giving ceremony this year owing to the war. The close of the year’s work will be marked by a garden fete in the school grounds tomorrow. The net. proceeds from the fete will be devoted to the Soldiers’ Fund. Scholarships Awarded Recommendations for awards of two scholarships were approved at a meeting of the Auckland University College Council yesterday. The Gillies Scholarship in science was awarded to J. G. Millar and the Walter Kirby Scholarship for singing was awarded to the present holder. Miss Rachel Mawhinney. Loss to School In the unexpected death of Dr. M. M. Hockin, the school had lost one of its staunchest friends, said Mr H. G. Sergei, headmaster of Southwell School, at the annual break-up ceremony yesterday. Dr. Hockin had been keenly interested in all the activities of the school and had done much for boys who had had to go to the Waikato Hospital. Need for Complete Unity “The only reasonable thing for the Government to do is to ask the Opposition, and anybody else who Is capable, to help it,” said the Bishop of Waikato, the Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington, at the Southwell School break-up ceremony, when referring to the necessity for complete unity in the present crisis. Bishop Cherrington said he hoped that anyone who had influence with the Government would endeavour to make it realise that a coalition of all parties was essential. Cow Put On Road For permitting a cow to wander, a farmer, H. J. Mehrtens, of Manawaru, was fined £2 and costs in the Magistrate’s Court, Te Aroha, yesterday morning. Sergeant W. Monson said it was not an ordinary case of a wandering animal, as the cow was suffering from mammitis and had been driven out onto the road. The defendant had destroyed the animal after being interviewed by the police. Centennial Scout Hall At a meeting of the South Auckland Zone Centennial Committee yesterday a letter was received from the Ai*jkland Provincial Centennial Council, asking whether the South Auckland committee approved the proposed erection of a scout hall at Waitoa as a Centennial memorial. The hall would be 50ft. x 50ft. and, built by voluntary labour, would cost about £250. No other memorial was planned for Waitoa. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, who is chairman of the committee, it was decided that the application be recommended for favourable consideration. Fire Engine In Collision
A collision between a fire engine and a private car occurred at Freeman’s Bay, Auckland, last evening. Mr Arthur Parker, a passenger in the car, had his wrist cut, but the driver Mr Rowland Edward Savage, was unhurt. None of the firemen was injured. The car was extensively damaged and the fire engine crashed on to the rockery at a corner of Victoria Park. A breakdown van was requisitioned to remove the car from the tram tracks and the engine from the rockery, the latter- vehicle also being damaged.
Destruction of Deer Plans of this year’s official campaign for the destruction of deer have Oeen completed by the fields division of the Department of Internal Affairs and are to be put into operation within a few days. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, stated yesterday that an extensive area of deer-infested country of the North and South Islands would be simultaneously attacked this season The number oi men engaged at the outset would be 120, of whom 30 would operate in the North Island and 90 in the South and Stewart Islands. The Minister said that in view of the increased value of deer-skins special efforts would be made to increase the proportion of skins recovered. It was expected that a substantial contribution toward the cost of the season s campaign and to overseas funds would be derived from that source.
