RACING AT TE AWAMUTU

FINE CEP FIELD SPRINT ATTRACTS EIGHTEEN PROSPECTS UNDER REVIEW (By “Martian") Fine fields are carded for the Summer meeting of the Waipa Racing Club, at Te Awamutu, tomorrow and indications are for a highly successful meeting. Both the Te Awamutu Cup and the sprint event, the Flying Handicap, have attracted large and well-balanced fields, while in the Waipa Plate a divided race will be necessary. Provision has also b£en made to run the Ohaupo Hack in divisions, but it is thought likely that there will be sufficient scratchings to obviate this. The racing surface is reported to be in splendid order. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects:— 11.45 W. G. PARK HURDLES

The class is not strong and the winning form of General Ruse at Paeroa and Tauranga commends his claims to consideration. Subsequently he failed at Avondale but that earlier form will claim him an optimistic following. Hopalong is a likely improver and London is not without prospect in this company. Royal Nation drew attention to his future prospects by the manner in which he was finishing on at the Pakuranga Hunt and as he is reported to be in forward condition he will not be without a following on the machines. Devon has shown jumping ability in the past and, like Chikara, he possesses a jumper’s chance. The latter was a meritorious third at the Waikato meeting last month and is capable of improvement on that showing. Seneta and Mio Fratollo appeal as the pick of the remainder in a race in which the fancied division may be found among— GENERAL RUSE ROYAL NATION CHIKARA 12.30 KIHIKIHI HACK HANDICAP 01 £130; 7 furs.

Some interesting material is engaged in the hack seven. Serenata was a winner at the Napier Park meeting and though she failed to reproduce that form in subsequent starts she is entitled to every consideration. Sunny Downs indicated at Te Rapa that early improvement can be expected soon and the fact that he has previously won on the course will claim him support. Te Takina is a likely improver, while Town Section, a winner at the Cambridge Hunt fixture and a place getter at Te Rapa last month, should make her presence feU, while the early brilliance of Ngawiri points to her making a bold bid to make amends for recent disappointments. She has been working well and it will not be on the score of condition if she fails to show to advantage. Pasture is a strong possibility and the winning form of Tellsom on the first day at Avondale points to him going a fine race. Further down are likely improvers in Clipper, Milanion and Miss Bridge. Cornish scored a runaway success in the Trial Stakes on the first day of the recent Waikato meeting and, at the weights, will have an excellent opportunity to continue his winning way. The favourites may be— CORNISH TOWN SECTION NGAWIRI

For purposes of this review it is assumed that the Plate event will be run in divisions. In the first division the Whangarei form of Tane Mahotu will claim him a following. Kingcraft may improve and Runanga has indicated on the track that he possesses speed above the average and is therefore not without a chance. Helga, too, has been working in promising style and High Crown, who was in the money at Whangarei, appeals as an improver with a chance. Merry Vaals, Lady Bambury, Maneroo and Phil Vaals are the best of the others in a race in which the elect of investors may be— LADY BAMBURY MANEROO

General Riske will need to improve and there are others that will be preferred. Lord Ace may be improved with racing at Te Rapa but Hutuwai, who has been working pleasingly in recent weeks, should hold him safe. White Foam has been racing consistently this term and on Whangarei form she looks to possess good prospects. Pertinax has been shaping well on the tracks as also have Trig Station and Glen Connell,

and the form of the latter at Avondale last month indicates a chance for him. Town Survey and Kilcash are the best of the others. A wellsuported pair may include— GLEN CONNELL HUTUWAI 2.5

The Cup field of 1939 is one of the finest yet to be seen at Te Awamutu and it will provide a fine betting race. The impressive form of Golden Sheila, who has won at her last two essays, the Hamilton Handicap and Alison Cup, indicates that she will be hard to dispose of again in her present state of fitness. Sly Fox ran second to her at Te Rapa and will now be meeting her on 91b better terms. He has been a model af consistency this season and should make a solid showing. Llangollen is a genuine mare and, like Flood Tide, has been working attractively of late. Both have the credentials to command their claims and will lack little on the score of condition. King Rey’s prospects will be enhanced if further rain falls. Handily weighted as he is with 8.7 Balinavar makes strong appeal and a line through the latest quality of his work would indicate that he may prove one of the hardest to dispose of. Further down Cheval de Volee, Baran, The Cardinal, Scotland, Gladynev and Vaalso make most appeal in a race in which the public may prefer the credentials of— BALINAVAR FLOOD TIDE THE CARDINAL

Saccone will need only to reproduce his best to take a power of beating, one of his best performances being his fine second to Namara in the Whangarei Cup. Greek Queen shaped well over the distance at Ellerslie last month while Palmint, too, has shown promising form over this distance of late. Mio Fratollo would have a chance if the sting is out of the ground, but Proud Fox may be preferred. He won really well over seven furlongs at the last Waikato meeting and this distance should not trouble him. Ureklaw’s latest form has been over hurdles but he is, nevertheless, not without prospects. Foxtoon is on the upgrade while other likely improvers include Racecamp, Ringshot and Karatoki, the last named being impressive in a five furlong trial at Te Rapa the other morning. When the final figures are hoisted there should be good support for— PROUD FOX SACCONE KARATOKI

As only four need to come out to obviate the race being run in divisions there is every reason to assume that a divided race will not be necessary. Erlick is a likely improver, while May Song is capable of effecting a surprise. Valdene’s form at Whangarei was encouraging, while that of Town Section at Cambridge and later at Te Rapa was such to indicate that she will make her presence felt here. Wild Ore is a solid type with the right credentials, while Pasture's form at Ellerslie will claim her support. Sieglinde’s end to end achievement on the latter day at Te Rapa last month suggests she will take a power of beating at the weights and she will be one of the favoured division. Glen Connell, Tellsom, Paxend, Buccaneer, Wyndora and Tavern Song will add in terest to the issue, which may oe summed up as being between— SIEGLINDE WILD ORE PASTURE

At his best. Suleiman would be one of the hardest to dispose of and as he has been shaping well on the tracks he will have to be considered. Orate has shown good form on occasions this season, while Our Jean, who won well on the latter day at Te Rapa, will lack little on the score of condition. Tosh is ua the upgrade while, fit and well on the day, Paddy the Rip would have good prospects. Corato should be Leid safe by the consistent Orwere, who is handily placed to give of his Lest Blonde Princess is in good heart at present, while other lightweight prospects comprise Foxinond, l’alustre, Gay Seton, Beau Kepaire and Te Monowai. Penzance should add in terest to the contest. The race beais a very open aspect, but a favoured rrio may be— OUR JEAN PADDY THE RIP ORWERE

Namara, winner of the Whanga- . rei Cup, has good prospects, ; while on the way he has been shaping on the tracks of late j ner ol the Whangarei Cup, has good | prospects, while on the v\ ay he has j been shaping on the tracks of late | Besiege promises to oe ore ol the . hardest to beat. It will not oe on the ; score of condition if ne lai's. Voting Paddon, too. has been going great j guns in his trials, while Full Hand, \ who won over a mile at Tp Kapa last month, will have a strong following. I Very Glad and Fils de Vaals are likely to trouble those further up the handicap, while of the lightweights to appeal most are Dark Shadow, who has been showing marked improvement on the tracks, Clessamor, Mintlaw and Respectful. It is an open race but public support j may come for— BESIEGE FULL HAND DARK SHADOW RIDING ENGAGEMENTS ! Riding engagements for the Waipa meeting tomorrow include: — W. M. Thomson: Very Glad.
