CHRISTMAS LEAVE

TROOPS ARRIVE TODAY Elated at the thought of an extended spell after ten weeks of vigorous training, 278 of the first echelon from Papakura and 96 from Hopu Hopu arrived in Hamilton shortly before midday by special tr&in. The train also brought about 130 for Rotorua. The men will return after their fortnight’s Christmas leave on December 28. There were crowds at both the Frankton and Hamilton stations to welcome the troops, and the scenes were in marked contrast with those witnessed when the men left nearly three months ago. Men in khaki were a conspicuous part of the crowds in Victoria Street today, and many left for districts surrounding Hamilton. During the day troops also travelled to Auckland, North Auckland, Taneatua and Taranaki. Tomorrow Hopu Hopu troops will leave camp for southern centres. Men from the Waikato in training centres in other parts of New Zealand will be arriving tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday. Skeleton guard forces of home defence duty men will remain in the camps. Christmas arrangements for these men will be made later.
