FAT STOCK SALES GOOD DEMAND FOR SHEEP I I ! COMPETITION FOR LAMBS j | I I AUCKLAND, Thursday « Late rates for all classes of stock , except lighter-weight porkers ruled ; at the Westfield sales yesterday. ■ The best bid for steers was £ls, 1 which was fractionally weaker than the top price of last week, and for cows it was £lO 10s, a gain of 7s 6d on the figure of a week ago. The average values to 37s per 1001 b were unchanged. The sale of sheep was a good one. There were no wethers as good as the choicest of last week, the top quotation of 27s 9d being 6d cheaper. Prime maiden ewes sold extremely well to 24s 9d, which was an improvement of 2s a head. Eveiy pen of lambs sold under keen competition. Values tended to | advance Is and more a head, while 1 the best consignment was traded at I 30s 3d a head, as against 26s 9d last ] week. The calf market was fully supplied. One prime runner made £8 | 16s, which was 10s better than last week’s main transaction, and the heaviest vealer realised £6 15s, as against £6 at the previous sale. Pigs sold readily throughout. Values were easily maintained by all good quality lots, but there was an easing of about Is to 2s a head in all but the heaviest porkers. This resulted in the average being quoted £d per lb cheaper, from 6£d to 7d, while bacon was unaltered from 6d to 6|d. Calves.—A good yarding of good quality calves came forward. Under steady competition a good sale resulted with values remaining firm on last week’s quotations. Runners, £5 to £8 16s; heavy vealers, £5 5s to £6 15s; medium, £4 5s to £5; light, £3 5s to £3 18s; small, £2 8s to £3; smaller, £1 5s to £2 2s; plain and unfurnished, 18s to £1 11s; bobby calves, 6s to 15s.

Pigs.—A large yarding of pigs came forward. From the start values for pork were easier, more so toward the end of the sale. Although there was a ready sale for bacon values had an easing tendency on late quotations. Heavy baconers, £3 13s to £4 2s; medium, £3 12s to £3 16s; light, £3 6s to £3 10s; heavy porkers, £2 14s to £2 19s; medium, £2 8s to £2 12s; light, £2 3s to £2 6s; small, £1 16s to £2; stores, £1 10s to £1 16s; slips, £1 6s to £1 10s; weaners, 16s to £1 4s. There was a steady demand, with values on a par with last week's sale.
