TE RAPA GALLOPS
YOUNG PADDON SHINES SIX FURLONGS IN 1.18 1-5 TOSH OVER FIVE ("By “Martian”) The flags were over 50ft out from the rails on the course proper at Te Rapa this morning but the splendid nature of the going resulted in several smart trials being recorded, the best of the morning being six furlongs by Young Paddon and Dark Shadow, and five furlongs by Tosh, Bronze Step and Ngawiri. The best effort over a round was that of Poland and Foxsen. Conditions generally were pleasant. Dark Shadow (Gollop), assisted over the first half-mile by Respectful (Doyle) and Meadow (Gilmer), hit out over six furlongs in 1.19 1-5, the first half-mile being traversed in 52 l-ss. Dark Shadow, who has made good progress of late, ran to the lead early and was several lengths clear at the half-mile. He was doing his work pleasingly throughout and is not without prospects at Te Awamutu, where he is to be ridden by the apprentice, V. Gollop. Ngawiri (Ensor) and Lady Waimai (Thomson) were associated over five furlongs, which they ran in 1.6 V 5, their first three furlongs in 37 1-5 and the half-mile in 52£s. Ngawiri has been showing a return to her best on the tracks of late and may soon be seen to advantage. Tosh Hits Out Tosh (Long) was shading Bronze Step (Gollop) over the deciding stages of five furlongs in 1.5 4-5, the first half-mile being cut out in 51 4-ss. It was a smart effort on the part of both horses and both are in forward condition for racing ahead. Seneta (O. Mclnally) ran once round in 2.10 1-5 and was revelling in her work at the end. In a similar essay Poland (Gollop) finished half-a-length in front of Foxsen (Doyle) in 2.8 1-5, the initial half-mile occupying 555. Calorie (Ensor) was doing better than Mio Fratollo (Cumerford) over six furlongs in 1.21 4-5, the first half-mile being negotiated in 54 l-ss. Calorie is coming to hand well. British Sovereign (Thomson) negotiated a round in 2.8 4-5. Starbright (Long) and Calshot (Doyle) were associated over five furlongs being timed to run their first half-mile in 53 4-5 s and the full distance in 1.8 1-5. Starbright executed his work in pleasing style. A Smart Three
A smart three furlongs was credited to the two-year-old filly by Whirlwind from Diversion, who with the stable apprentice, W. O. Ensor up, ran up the back in 36 3-ss, her first furlong requiring 12 l-5s and the second furlong 11 4-ss. She is a smart looking youngster and interest will attach to her progress. Nithmount (Thomson) and Flashing Spear (Taylor) ran to the halfmile in 51 4-ss, which was an attractive effort for horses of their class. Wyndora (Long) and TriUiarch (Cumerford) hit out over five furlongs in 1.7, their initial half-mile in 53 2-ss. The former is making steady progress. The star gallop of the morning was that of Young Paddon (Gollop), who, after running the first three furlongs in 37 l-ss, the half-mile in 51 l-5s and five furlongs in 1.4 3-5, ran the full distance in 1.18 1-5. Young Paddon was carrying only a lightweight and was galloping without shoes, but, nevertheless, the effort was a sound one and indicative of his forward condition. A useful effort was credited to Miss Bridge (Taylor), who traversed five furlongs in 1.7, her initial halfmile being run in 53 4-ss. Jumpers Schooled Inness Lad (Cotter) was schooled over a round of hurdles (four flights) and gave a satisfactory exhibition. Mio Lume (Winder), who is bearing a healthy appearance, was schooled over two flights along the back and gave a sound display. Later he was worked over a round on the course proper and hit out boldly but was not timed. Green Label (Mr K. Holmes) was responsible for a dashing display over a round of hurdles. Additional riding engagements for the Waipa meeting include:— J. Mclnally.—Lady Waimai. A. Gilmer. Hopalong, General Riske. M. Amu ns den.—Runanga. R. E. Thomson.—Devon. V. Gollop.—Dark Shadow, Princess Lu, Wild Ore, Karatoki, Miss Bridge-
