January I—Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club. GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS The first race at Te Awamutu on Saturday will start at 11.45 and the Jast race is scheduled to commence at Addition to Team Sir Tommy is a recent addition to A. Winder’s stable. Plans for May Song May Song claims a dual engagement at the Waipa meeting and will have the services of F. Hain in the apprentices’ race, the Kihikihi Hack, and J. Winder in the Ohaupo Hack. Hutuwai May Improve Hutuwai showed early speed in his > two engagements this season and as he has been working along pleasingly of late there is every reason to anticipate that he will race prominently in the first division of the Waipa Plate on Saturday. Kingcraft Kingcraft, the half brother to Gladynev and Rona Bay, is bearing 1 a healthy appearance and yesterday ! worked satisfactorily over five fur- j longs. He is a fine upstanding in- I dividual and as he comes solid he j should win races for his connections. General Ruse The winning form of General Ruse at Paeroa and Tauranga will claim i him generous support in the W.G. I Park Hurdles at Te Awamutu on j Saturday. His form stands out above the balance of the field and the fact I that he is to have the services of J. j H. Mcßae further enhances his claims. j

Dark ShadowDark Shadow has been bowling along in improved style on the tracks at Te Rapa and appears to be coming to hand well. He is to essay the r Paterangi Handicap at Te Awamutu this week and though he races well fresh he may not be sufficiently attuned as yet to give of his best. 1 Ngawiri Shapes Well r Ngawiri shaped well over five furlongs at headquarters yesterday and 1 she appears to be coming back to her best again. It is in favour of Ngawiri that she possesses the early brilliance so essential to success on a turning track and this aspect should not be overlooked in the summing up 1 of the Kihikihi Hack at the Waipa meeting. May Improve Chikara was responsible for an en- : couraging performance when he finished on well to account for all but Ureklaw and Ringshot in the Waimai Hack Hurdles at Te Rapa last month, and in view of the comparative mediocrity of the opposition in the W.G. Park Hurdles at Te Awamutu he appeals as having an excellent chance. BALIN'A VAR Balinavar has been a model of consistency this season although he has failed to win outright, his six starts yielding five seconds and a third. At his last appearance, last month in the St. Andrews Handicap at Ellerslie, he accounted for all but Birthday Boy and as he has been hitting out freely on the tracks at Te Awamutu it is quite on the cards he may make amends in the Te Awamutu Cup this week. He is to have the services of C. G. Goulsbro. Besiege Improved 1 Besiege has not been raced exten- ! sively this season and had his last 1 outing at the Paeroa meeting at the j end of September. In the interim, j however, he has been working j stylishly at Waipa headquarters and j promises to strip a particularly fit gelding for Saturday’s engagement in I the Paterangi Handicap.

Town Section Town Section has been racing consistently of late, following up her success over six and a-half furlongs at Cambridge on Labour Day with a meritorious third on the first day at the last Te Rapa meeting to Penzance and Gamos. The Matamata representative is reported to be working well and promises to strip in good order for racing at the fixture. A Maiden of Promise Among the promising maidens at headquarters is the three-year-old Siegfried filly Maneroo, who has repeatedly shown speed above the average on the tracks, speed which she would need only to reproduce in public to earn her a winning stake. So far lack of stamina has been against her but as she comes solid she should prove a remunerative proposition. Catalogue Returns According to a report from Palmerston North, Catalogue returned to Awapuni on Friday. He is in great heart and the opinion was expressed by A. McDonald that it was a pity he was brought back from Australia just yet. Present plans are indefinite but it is thought there is little likelihood of his taking his place in the New Zealand Cup field. Chances of Tellsom While he has failed in subsequent essays the winning form of Tellsom at the Avondale meeting was such to suggest he would further extend his account in the near future and he must be taken into account in the Kihikihi this week. The long Avondale straight provides a true test of a horse’s ability and on that occasion at Avondale Tellsom came through with flying colours. Young Paddon Few horses at Te Rapa are better qualified to handle heavy going than Young Paddon and a line through his brilliant effort over five furlongs yesterday morning draws attention to his prospects at the forthcoming Waipa gathering. He is an acceptor for the Paterangi Handicap (7 furlongs) and should give a solid account of himself. Karatoki Shows Dash Karatoki, who in recent starts has proved somewhat of a disappointment, indicated by a solid effort over five furlongs yesterday morning that he is on the upgrade and early improvement can confidently be expected. He cleared right out from Kingcraft and Surtoy over the latter stages of the effort and though he was carrying a lightweight his effort was a particularly pleasing one. PLANS FOR DICTATE NOT RACING AT TE AWAMUTU According to a report from Christchurch Dictate will not be racing at the Waipa meeting at Te Awamutu on Saturday. He left Christchurch for Auckland to-day and is reported to be looking all the better for his race at Hororata. He will be ridden in the Auckland Cup by C. Wilson, Hamilton. Wiggins, who was tentatively engaged to ride him, indicating to the horse’s connection that his services may be required for Birthday Boy in the big Ellerslie event.
