PATRIOTIC DONATION
COMFORTS FOR SOLDIERS 10 GNS. FROM POWER BOARD A decision to make a donation of ten guineas as an initial contribution to the fund for the provision of comforts for soldiers was made by the Central Waikato Electric Power Board today, when a letter was received from the Hamilton Patriotic Committee. “This is a very good cause and I think we should make a donation," said Mr W. C. E. George. “You know my views, and that I am opposed to giving anything,” said Mr R. G. Joung. “It is the job of the Government to provide these amenities for the men who are going to fight. At present the people have not got the money to give. If they had it I am sure they would give willingly." Support for Mr George’s remarks was voiced by Mr G. Smith, who also supported the idea of a common pool for the funds. In reply to a question, Mr George explained the manner in which the pool would operate. He added that the people of Hamilton had already given liberally and had done much better than many other districts. Mr George’s motion that ten guineas be given as a first contribution was carried. Mr Young dissenting. It was also decided, on receipt of a letter from the Franklin zone committee of the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council, to donate two guineas towards the cost of publishing a booklet entitled “South Auckland”.
