FIRST TRAIN OYER

NEW RAILWAY BRIDGE LONGEST IN NEW ZEALAND RAKAIA RIVER SPANNED (By TelegTapD.—press Associttloc) CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday Without any ceremony the new railway bridge over the Rakaia River was opened to traffic for the first time to-day. The bridge is the longest railway structure in New Zea-

land, being 5720 feet in length. The change-over from the 60-year-jold wooden structure was made between the passage of the ChristI church-Invercargiil express at 6.56 a.m. and that of a mixed train from Ashburton, which passed over the new bridge at 12.30 p.m. Once the customary precautions have been observed in regard to the passage of trains over newly-constructed lines, there will be no speed restriction over the new bridge. Trains will be able to travel at the normal speed of 50 miles an hour, compared with the maximum speed of 20 miles an hour allowed on the old bridge. 'Hie new bridge, which w r as originally estimated to cost £85,000, has been built a short distance upstream from the existing wooden structure.
