WHAT TO KNIT
WOOLLEN SCARVES & HELMETS KNITTING needles are working hard these days, and women and girls everywhere are making comforts for the men on service, says a Scottish paper. A.re you wondering what you should knit? Perhaps you don’t fancy | working socks, turning the heel is so tricky! Why not try this scarf or helmet? The men of our fighting forces will be grateful for such | woollies when the cold weather sets KNITTED SCARF J A very serviceable type of scarf and it requires only a small amount of wool. j Materials. —Four ounces four-ply i wool in khaki. This will make a i scarf 43 inches long; for a longer I scarf allow five ounces. Two knitIting needles No. 8. Abreviations.—K.knit; P, purl; st. stitch or stitches; tog., together.

Press the scarf under a cloth to open the pattern slightly, and pres* I the border only under a damp cloth. A COSY HELMET This helmet is very simply worked. Materials.—Two ounces four-ply wool in khaki; four knitting needles (without ends) No. 8. Cast on 100 stitches and work in i rounds for 50 rounds, in rib of knit 1 1, purl 1. Put 26 stitches on one needle for front of helmet and 74 on another for back. Rib backwards and forwards on the 74 | stitches for 50 rows. Now work on ithe 26 centre stitches of these 74 [stitches (24 on each side of the i centre 26) and rib backwards and forwards, purling the last stitch of | every row with one of the remaining • stitches on the needle till all^artia
stitches are used up. Divide the back stitches on to two needles and knit up the stitches down the side of the back piece just knitted as you would do in the heel of a stocking, taking up 25 stitches. Rib the 26 front stitches and knit up 25 stitches along the other side, knitting the 13 back stitches on to third needle. Now work round and round in rib, knitting two stitches together at the end of the first needle and the beginning of the third needle (taking the stitches through the back loops at the beginning of third needle) till I there are 26 stitches on each back j needle. Cast off not too tightly.
