The Maungatautari Women’s In- ! stitute held its last meeting for this . year at Mrs Hill’s home, when the ' president, Mrs Dallinger, presided over a good attendance. It was decided to purchase a copy of the book “Tales of Pioneer Women” for the Institute. Mrs Devonport read a link letter from Mrs McPhee, of the Takapau Institute. This gave a pleasant homely account of the doings of this Institute. A full and lucid account of the bi-annual conference was given by Miss Hicks. I The roll call, “Should women smoke | in public,” gave members an oppor- i tunity of expressing their opinions on j this subject. The motto was given i by Mrs Judd. j
Mrs Dallinger gave an account of the lectures and healing works of Dr. McDonald Bayne and read extracts from his lectures dealing with the necessity for truth in early instruction given to children and truthful answers to children’s questions. It was decided not to have a meeting in January. At the close of the meeting, Mrs Dallinger thanked Mrs Hill for her hospitality throughout the year and presented her ■ with a pottery vase, with the members’ best wishes. Mrs Dallinger also took the opportunity of wishing members the compliments of the season. The hostesses were Mrs Scott, and Mrs O’Neill and the sales table was taken by Mrs Ariell. The results of competitions were as follows: —Flowers, presentation box, Mrs Judd 1, Mrs Devonport 2; billy sponge, Mrs Judd; apron, Mrs Devonport 1, Miss Hicks and Mrs Judd (equal), 2; vegetables, Mrs Dallinger 1, Mrs Osborne 2.
TE HOE
Mrs E. Thompson presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute which was held in the hall. A detailed report on the Waikato Federation of Women’s Institutes bi-annual conference held in Hamilton was read by Miss L. Heron. A garden party has been arranged to take place in January at the residence of Mrs E. A. Thompson. Miss Price, who is leaving the district, was presented with a gift as a token of appreciation of her services .as judge of the Women’s Institute competitions. A sales table in charge of Mrs C. Twining was well patronised. The roll call, “Christmas hints,” met with good response and Mrs Cox supplied the motto. The competition results were as follows:—Women’s Institute competition, best plate of decorated cakes, Mrs Brown 1, Mrs May 2; best bloom, Mrs Brown 1, Mrs McGuire 2; Hostess competitions, Mrs Laing and Mrs Carter. The hostesses for the day were Mesdames Dickie and May. WARDVILLE There was a fair attendance at the November meeting of the Wardville Women’s Institute. Mrs Kilpen presided owing to the absence of Mrs Schaare who was attending a conference at Wellington. The motto for the afternoon was, “Do to another as you would that they would do unto you.” Mr A. L. Clark, a member of* the Matamata St. John Ambulance, gave an interesting demonstration on artificial respiration. Competitions were won as follows:—Best flower, Mrs McKenna 1, Mrs Sheat 2; currant scones, Mrs F. Hughes 1, Mrs’ A. Hughes 2; dress, Mrs A. Hughes 1, Mrs F. Hughes 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Franich and Mrs Hollis. WHITIKAHU The Whitikahu Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting recently. The motto, “Peace, the central feeling of all happiness,’ 7 and the rollcall, “The most beautiful thing I have seen since last meeting,” brought forth many interesting subjects. Competition, Christmas gift not to cost more than Is 6d, was won by Mrs McCallum with Miss V. Best second. A competition arranged by Mrs McQueen using all our members’ names caused much fun and was won by Mrs Williams. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs Williams. Afternoon tea brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. TE KAWA The December meeting of the Te Kawa Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently, when Mrs Henderson presided over an excellent attendance of members and visitors. The roll-call, “Verse for Christmas card,” was well responded to. An interesting talk was given by Miss E. Alderson on “Great women in war." The results of the competitions were as follows:—Collection of vegetables, Mrs W. Neill 1, Mrs F. Thomas 2; Christmas gift, Mrs Carr 1, Miss E. Alderson 2. There was also an exchange of Christmas gifts. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Carr and Benton, Fnr. _________
WOMEN’S DIVISION TAUHEI BRANCH The last meeting of the year of ■the Tauhei branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers’ Union was held recently, Mrs W. A. Crow presiding over a good attendance. The roll-call, “Useful hints,” was responded to by all members. Much appreciation was shown of a demonstration which was given by Mrs Best, of the Whitakauhu Institute. Mrs A. Scott won the prize for the best bloom and Mrs Harris for the best Christmas cake. Mrs W. Best was the judge. After a long discussion it was decided to co-operate with the school committee to hold a Christmas tree and fancy dress function on the day school breaks up. j Mrs A. Scott and Mrs D.
