BIG BEEF ENTRY

VALUES EASE SLIGHTLY MARKET AT FRANKTON LITTLE CHANGE FOR SHEEP Cows and heifers were forward in the largest numbers for some months at the Frankton sale yesterday, fully two and a-half rows being occupied, while steers were also forward in increased numbers, these taking up well over one and a-half rows. Although values were back, the sale was a very satisfactory one under the circumstances. Steers were usually back a few shillings per head, but the quality of them was hardly as attractive as previous weeks. Prices per head foil top quality sorts were much the same as last week, yesterday’s heavy entries selling from £l2 10s to £l3 5s per head and medium to heavy descriptions realising from £ll 9s to £l2 2s 6d per head. Meaty sorts changed hands from £lO 16s to £ll ss, while light cattle were knocked down from £9 2s 6d to £lO 15s. Cows and heifers were back by 10s to 15s per head in the majority of cases, but in view of the very heavy entry a more substantial decline in values would not have been surprising. All classes sold particularly well under the circumstances and although prices were down the market itself compared very favourably with previous markets when lighter entries were forward. Heavy prime sorts were auctioned from £8 7s to £9 Is per head, and other attractive descriptions from £7 2s 6d to £8 3s. halves and boner cattle showed little variation in values. Sheep and Pigs The fat sheep market was again heavily supplied. Although the tone of the market did not appear as aright as last week and competition sometimes lacked spirit, the market was usually firm at last sale’s improved values. In some cases values were back, but the quality of the sheep, which was not usually as good as last week, had to be taken into account. Best wethers were usually traded from 23s 9d to 25s 3d, while good ewes were quoted from 17s 3d to 19s, the money in both cases being practically the same as last week. A larger entry of store sheep met with an exceptionally keen demand and often the advanced prices recorded showed surprisingly little difference from fat sheep levels, good forward wethers making to 20s 7d. The demand was again very keen for fat pigs and values were just a shade firmer, baconers making from 63s to 84s against 61s to 82s last week, and porkers from 45s to 62s in comparison with 44s to 60s. Store pigs also sold briskly and were often dearer.
