SPRING MEETING
WELL-BALANCED CARD PROSPECTS UNDER REVIEW (By “Martian”) Excellent fields are carded for the opening day, to-morrow, of the Avondale Jockey Club’s second spring meeting and with fine weather the club should' experience a most successful fixture. Te Rapa stables are freely represented. Betting will be on the win and place system. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects. 12.0 RANGITOTO HURDLEB
The form of Mia Acrea at Ellerslie recently was encouraging, but General Ruse appeals more. After winning well on the first day at Paeroa he was narrowly beaten on the second and made amends subsequently at Tauranga by prevailing over Chikara and Gascyne. His consistency commends his claims. The dashing Lapidarian will command a strong following and a repetition of his Ellerslie form will make him hard to beat. Tupeotu scored attractively over country at Ellerslie last month, while Ureklaw, a useful performer over hurdles last season, is not without prospects. The showing of Knight of Australia in the Manukau Hurdles last month was encouarging and he may do better on this occasion. Royal Abb, a winner on either day at the recent Whangarei fixture makes strong appeal and as he is a fit horse just now and is a splendid jumper he should be one of the hardest to beat. Of the others the best may be Dauber, Wild Acre, Mio Fratollo and Cintrace. In a good betting race favouritism may be divided between— LAPIDARIAN ROYAL ABB GENERAL RUSE 12.44 TRIAL BTAKES Sweepstakes or £2 each with £2OO added, special weights, 7 furs.
In the large field the luck of the running may have a bearing on the result. Glen Connell has been working in characteristic style at Auckland and his useful second to Meadow on this course in September should be borne in mind. Royal Son shaped like an improver at Whangarie and will have to be respected. Buccaneer’s success at the same meeting renders him ineligible for this event. Right Royal and Pleuron are a likely pair and Mayfair has been working sufficiently well to suggest an excellent chance for her. Further down, Maereana, Princess Val, Gay Movie and Phil Vaals should add interest to the contest in which a favoured trio may include— MAYFAIR GLEN CONNELL ROYAL SON 1.26 JUVENILE HANDICAP Of £225; two-ye&r-olds; 5 furs.
Grandora will be meeting Queen City on 81b better terms than when the latter accounted for him in the Welcome Stakes last month. Queen City’s winning margin was but a narrow one on that occasion so there is reason to anticipate that Grandora may turn the tables on this occasion. Kentucky has been racing consistently yet somewhat unluckily in recent starts and is sure to make a bold showing here. Phaleron, who has been working stylishly, is a likely improver, while of the others the best may be Money Spinner and Maori Star. There should be good support forthcoming for— QUEEN CITY GRANDORA KENTUCKY 2.10 KING GEORGE HANDICAP Of £400; 1 mile and 3 furs.
Royal Appellant has been working in attractive fashion on the tracks and it will not be on the score of condition if he fails to show to advantage. Balinavar is handily placed to give of his best and Birthday Boy, who appeared unlucky at Ellerslie, will have his opportunity here to make amends. Scotland is a genuine type when attuned and he, too, was unlucky at the Ellerslie fixture. Philcourt, runner-up to Very Glad at Cambridge on Labour Day failed to reproduce that form at Whangarei but he should not be readily discarded on that account. He is capable of better things. Reauiem and Raceline are not out of it and in the event of rain falling their prospects will be enhanced. The prime fancies may comprise— BIRTHDAY BOY SCOTLAND BALINAVAR
The hack six has attracted a smart field and fancies will take a wide range. Bronze Moth has shown good form this season and is sure to make a forward showing. Kenneth Robert, a winner at Tauranga last month, should account for Dragon Moth, while Sebrof’s encouraging form at Whangarei will ensure him a following on the machines. High Delight returned to the winning lists at Whangarei and in his present state of fitness will have to be conceded an excellent chance. The Trimmer, Meadow (a winner at the last Avondale fixture) and Penzance, whose latest running has indicated early improvement, are a trio of useful sorts with the right credentials to commend their claims. Te Kawiti has been racing well, while other prospects include Trevace, Solitary, Clipper, Summary and Hunter’s Rose. There should be good support forthcoming for— HIGH DELIGHT MEADOW TE KAWITI
That fine sprinter Llangollen will need only to be herself on the day to take a power of beating and the long Avondale straight will be to her advantage. Orate has been racing with a consistency that will ensure him an optimistic following, while Francis Drake, who has been working well, will strip in great heart for the meeting. Emdale won on the course in September and Royal Bachelor, if in the mood, will have to be conceded every chance. Bronwen, Aero King and Bachelor King should account for the others. When the final figures are hoisted there should be strong inquiry for— LLANGOLLEN BRONWEN ORATE 4.27
The form of Hot Box in the Poland Cup at Paeroa was impressive and though he subsequently failed in Ellerslie engagements he is capable of making amends. Vaalso is a likely improver, who shaped well in the Liverpool Handicap at Ellerslie last month, while Tip Toes, who scored stylishly over the distance at the Tauranga fixture recently, will have a firm following in the betting. Requiem is a likely sort and the Whangarei running of Silver Eagle indicated that he is on the upgrade again. Eastern Heir, Mon Acre, Trilliarch and Mai de Mer will add interest to the contest in which the public may prefer the credentials of— HOT BOX VAALSO TIP TOES 5.15 NIHOTUPU HACK HANDICAP
The success of Vaalstar on either day at Paeroa points to his going another solid race to-morrow. High Delight returned to form at Whangarei and if started here in preference to the hack six he will not be without an optimistic following. Erlick is an improver with a chance and Devon, Royal Tray, a winner at Whangarei, and Spinning Wheel, are a likely trio who should add interest. Hunto and The Dozer are entitled to respect and the form of Bronze Step on the first day at Whangarei points to her taking a hand in the finish. She has come through her racing last week in good heart and it will not be on the score of condition if she fails to show to advantage. The elect may be— DEVON VAALSTAR BRONZE STEP
