PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
CENTENNIAL ASSEMBLY TO MEET IN CHRISTCHURCH MISSION FUND DEFICIT On Tuesday the Centennial Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand will open in Christchurch. The sessions will extend over a week. The Right Rev. J. E. Riddle will preside at the opening ceremony after which the Moderatorelect, the Rev. J. Lawson Robinson, of St. Andrew’s Church, Christchurch, will be installed.
He will preside at subsequent meetings and also at the adjourned meeting in Wellington in February when the church will celebrate its centennial in the Dominion, holding a service and erecting a memorial cross on the Petone Beach on the spot where on February 23, 1840, the Rev. John Macfarlane held the first Presbyterian service in New Zealand. Many important matters will come up for consideration, among them the condition of mission funds, which show a considerable deficit despite the fact that contributions during last year showed an increase of about £3OOO. The church’s attitude towards war will also be discussed.
The Waikato Presbytery will be represented by about 17 delegates, ministers and laymen. Simultaneously with the sessions of Assembly the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union will hold its annual conference, which usually attracts about 250 delegates.
