FURTHER MISHAPS

OPEN GOLF TITLE SECOND ROUND PLAY TRYING CONDITIONS (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday The weather was brilliantly fine for the second day of the New Zealand golf championships at Miramar, but a northerly wind was sweeping across the links in gusts of half gale force. This troubled all players at times. The greens were in perfect order after overnight rain. The second round of the open and the qualifying rounds of the amateur and professional championships, as well as the teams match for the O Rorke Vase, were played today. The open title will be decided tomorrow, when the final two rounds will be played. As was the case yesterday, the “topliners” did not start until after lunch. The youngest competitor in the tournament, K. Smith, aged 17, who, at one time, was a caddie at Miramar, returned a good card of 78 to-day. He was out in bogey 37, but on the homeward nine he slipped four strokes in a row and could get only 41. F. Dixon, whose 76 yesterday was among the best, was on his game today. He dropped seven strokes at three holes and was 45 at the turn. He was going much better up to the 18th (380 yards—bogey 4), where he returned an inglorious eight. Following are the scores for the first two rounds, up to the time of going to press:—

W. Caulton (Greymoulh) 90 D. C. Collins (Wellington) 92 STEADY GOLF GLADING CONSISTENT MURRAY IN GOOD FORM (Special to Time*) WELLINGTON, Thursday The feature of the first day’s play was the immaculate golf played by R. H. Glading, whose 37 both days was the result of consistent play. Glading was considered in Hamilton to have an excellent chance of annexing the open and the amateur championships and the steady nature of his golf today gives him a chance. He was nearly machine perfect. Two birdies in the first three holes sent him away to a good start. He dropped a stroke at the 18th where he had a chance of being the best scorer. J. D. Mclntosh, the unattached professional, had only 11 putts for the first nine holes and went out in 34, three under bogey. It was brilliant golf but he took a six at the eighteenth. The present champions, P. G. F. Smith (amateur) and N. H. Fuller (professional) went round together but neither did anything sensational. Hornabrook, Shaw, Basil Smith, junior, Douglas and Silk all had unlucky spells but were stroking nicely and should all improve on first day. Alex Murray, who won the open in 1935 and led at Hamilton in 1937, only to be disqualified, played some brilliant shots and will be one of Glading’s hardest opponents. SHORTAGE OF CADDIES UNUSUAL EXPERIENCE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Competitors in the New Zealand golf championships, which were commenced at the Miramar course today, had the unusual experience of contending with a shortage of caddies. In an effort to relieve the situation the State Placement Office was asked to provide men. Owing to the fact, however, that players would have had to pay 5s 6d a round, most of the competitors had the service of • friend or did without a caddie-
