Seddon Road Crossing: A decision to protest to the Government against the delay in the erection of a traffic warning sign at the Seddon Road railway crossing was made at a meeting of the executive committee of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce yesterday afternoon. New Coal Bunkers The lowest tender received by the Waikato Hospital Board for the erection of new coal bunkers at the hospital was £670. The estimated cost of the work was £6OO. At a meeting of the board yesterday it was decided to accept the tender. Burned by Steam When a steam greasing gun he was> operating exploded yesterday afternoon, Mr Jack Townsend, aged 32, an employee of the Railways Department at Frankton, received burns to the head and face. He was admitted to the Waikato Hospital, and advice received to-day stated that his condition was satisfactory. Band for the Army A military band of 28 players under the conductorship of Captain G. Buckley will go into the Papakura mobilisation camp to-morrow morning and will remain there while soldiers are being trained. The instruments for the band have been lent by the Auckland City Council. Dust Nuisance Abated One of the minor nuisances at the Hopu Hopu military training camp, especially over the past few weeks, has been the dust from the sand roads leading into the camp and around various sections of the area. These roads have now been tarsealed and the dust nuisance has abated. Tuberculosis Cases The Waikato Hospital Board decided yesterday to support the suggestion of the Tauranga Hospital Board that a conference of boards should be held to consider tuberculosis treatment. Mr F. Findlay, the chairman of the Waikato Board, and Mr T. G. Reynolds were appointed representatives of the board at the conference. Hospital Facilities Improvements to the Te Kuiti Hospital and the Pio Pio residence controlled by the Waikato Hospital Board were recommended in a report on the two buildings made to the board yesterday by tne chairman, Mr F. Findlay. It was stated that if the Pio Pio people helped themselves by raising funds for the work the board would give them every assistance. Help for Red Cross A party of artists from Hamilton tiaveiled to Ngaruawahia last night to assist at a concert in aid of tne Red Cross funds. Items were given by Mrs lan Stewart (songs), Misses L. McKelvie (national dancing), Roit Docherty (tap dancing), Messrs R. Henderson (magic) and R. Watt (bag pipe solos). Mr S. James was the accompanist.
Remedy for Nerves “ If our women would get out in the garden and hoe kumeras the way their Maori sisters do we would hear less of nerves and nerve strain,” said Dr. H. Douglas, patron of the Hamilton Horticultural Society, in opening the society’s rose show yesterday. “In these days of stress it is a merciful escape to get into the garden, and I am quite sure if we gave more time to our gardens we would lead a much happier life.”
Friendly Society Fees At the meeting of the house and finance committee of the Waikato Hospital Board last week, which was reported upon at the board meeting yesterday, the secretary, Mr A. C. Burgess, said that the Auckland Hospital Board had decided to take no action in arranging to enter into proper agreement with friendly societies for the payment of outpatient fees. The Waikato Board decided to continue its present arrangements with friendly societies.
Westport Coal Company The directors of the Westport Coal Company, Limited, report that the profit for the year ended September 30 amounts to £22,739, to which is added £13,552 brought in, making a total of £36,291. An interim dividend of 6d a share was paid for the halfyear ended March 31, absorbing £11,250, and leaving a balance to be dealt with of £25,041. Out of this the directors propose to pay a final dividend of 6d a share for the halfyear ended September 30, requiring £11,250, and to carry forward £13,791.
