ROSES ON SHOW
HAMILTON DISPLAY
SUCCESSFUL REVIVAL LARGE ENTRY OF BLOOMS The first rose show to be held is Hamilton for many years was staged in the Waikato Winter Show Hall by the Hamilton Horticultural Society to-day. Owing to the difficulty in securing a suitable hall when roses are at their best this fixture has not been possible for some time, but today’s display made an auspicious revival, with 150 entries of exceptionally fine blooms. Apart from the competitive side of the show, features were wonderful exhibits from Mrs H. Douglas, an old supporter of the society, Mr H. H. Bennett, of Te Kowhai, and from Memorial Park. Mrs Douglas’ display demonstrated that she retains her prowess at rose culture and excited the admiration of all who visited the show. An authority on roses and a consistent winner in former years of the Douglas Cup, the principal trophy of the show, Mr Bennett provided a magnificent stand of 60 blooms. Mr Bennett, the holder, made a fine gesture this year when he agreed to t tand down in the Douglas Cup contest. Beautiful Display of Blooms * With few rivals from the point of view of setting and its flowers, Memorial Park was able to supply the .‘how with a third and equally beautiful display of blooms. Carried out by members of the gardening circle of the Hamilton Lyceum Club, the benching of the entries, the special exhibits and the decorating of the hall was most skilfully executed. The mass of splendid blooms of every hue which caught > the eye immediately on entering the building certainly brought home the realisation that Hamilton gardener* give to their roses many of their ieisure hours. The show was officially opened thin afternoon by Dr. H. Douglas, patroci of the society. Messrs E. Hosking and G. J. Hollinger, of Papakura, were the judges. The Douglas Cup for the best 12 blooms of distinct varieties was won by Mrs H. A. Bradley, of Te Aroha. She also won the prize for the champion bloom, a Dorina Neave.
