WATERSIDE WORK
COMPLAINTS AT DUNEDIN MEN REFUSE OVERTIME (Special to Times) DUNEDIN. Wednesday That an unsatisfactory situation exists with respect to the handling of cargo and the working of ships at the Port of Otago is indicated by frequent complaints that have been heard lately from shipping agents and shippers. Specific instances of the pointblank refusal of waterside workers to accept employment in excess of normal hours, even at considerably increased wages, in times of emergency when the prompt despatch of a vessel is is a matter of particular urgency have been quoted lately. Inquiries, however, have so far failed to produce information necessary for an effective exposure of the position. Agents and shippers alike are disinclined to make any statement concerning the actual happenings and in one or two cases to-day refused even to make any comments on the ground that if the waterside workers decided upon any form of reprisal against a single company or organisation no assistance or remedy could be expected from the Government.
