FAT STOCK SALES DROP IN BEEF PRICES DEMAND FOR BACONERS AUCKLAND, Thursday Yardings at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday were generally larger than in the previous week. The beef entry was slightly larger and all classes eased 3s to 4s per 1001 b. The top price for steers was £ls ss, compared with £lB last week. One consignment of cows and heifers made to £l3 2s 6d, as against £l2 2s 6d last week, but general values were lower. Prime wethers made to 27s 3d, as compared with 30s 9d at the last sale. Ewes sold to 22s 6d, compared with 225. An average entry of spring lamb sold steadily at slightly lower rates, making to 27s 3d, compared with 31s 6d. Values were easier in a large yarding of calves. Runners sold to £9 10s, against £9 2s. Vealers were 14s lower at £6 10s. Porkers maintained late quotations, while baconers showed a slight improvement. Baconers sold to £4 9s, an increase of 2s, and averaged 6sd to 6£d per lb, compared with last week, while porkers made to £3 3s, against £3 2s. Average rates for porkers remained the same at 6|d to 7|d per lb. Individual Consignments Top price for steers was £ls ss, made by two lots from Mr Ben Reed, Waerenga, and a line from Mr C. G. Orr, Tuakau. Lines from Messrs Craven Brothers, Ruawai, and Mr J. Hannon, Hautapu, were quoted to £l3 17s 6d. Up to £l3 2s 6d was bid for a consignment of cows and heifers from Mr C. Proctor, Ohinewai, and to £lO 15s was paid for a lot from the Caleb Hill Estate, Ohinewai. Up to £9 was paid for a consignment from Mr H. Windsor, Matangi, while a lot from Mr J. A. Hill, Ohinewai, was quoted to £8 12s 6d. Dalgety and Company Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report having yarded 134 head of beef, comprising 27 steers and 107 cows and heifers, compared with 125 head last week. Quotations: — Extra choice ox sold to 38s per 1001 b; choice and prime, 35s to 375; secondary and plain, 32s to 345; prime young cow and heifer beef, 34s to 365; choice cow beef, 30s to 335; ordinary, 24s to 295. Extra heavy prime steers ranged from £l4 to £ls ss; heavy prime steers, £l3 to £l3 17s 6d; lighter prime steers, £l2 to £l2 17s 6d; light prime steers, £ll to £ll 17s 6d; small and unfinished, £lO to £lO 15s; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £lO to £l3 2s 6d; heavy prime, £9 to £9 15s; lighter prime, £7 10s to £B- - light, £6 to £7; aged and unfinished cows, £4 to £5 15s. Sheep.—We had a big yarding and, although the demand was steady, last week’s prices were not obtained, all classes being lower. Lambs.—A large yarding sold steadily, but did not reach last week’s levels. Heavy, prime lamb, £1 3s to £1 ss; medium, £1 Is 6d to £1 2s 6d; lighter, £1 to £1 Is; light, 18s to 19s 6d. Calves were yarded in large numbers, a lot of plain calves coming forward. From the outset values were easier, especially for unfinished sorts, which were hard to quit. Runners, £5 to £8 ss; heavy vealers, £5 10s to £6 10s; medium, £4 15s to £5 7s 6d; light, £3 15s to £4 11s; small, £3 to £3 12s; smaller, £1 10s to £2 15s; plain and unfinished, 15s to £1 15s; bobby calves, 5s to 16s. Pigs.—A heavy yarding came forward under keen competition. A steady sale resulted with values remaining on a par with late rates. Loan and Mercantile j The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, reports:— Beef.—A larger yarding met a slacker demand, with values receding 10s to 15s a head, equivalent to 3s to 4s per 1001 b., according to weight and quality. Heavier cattie were affected most. Extra choice ox, £1 18s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, £1 14s to £1 17s; ordinary and plain, £1 8s to £1 13s; prime young cow and heifer beef, £1 10s to £1 16s; ordinary cow beef, £1 5s to £1 9s. Sheep.—Although a large market, which included many unfinished (sorts, met a steady demand, values were again easier by Is to 2s per head. Heavy prime wethers, £1 6s to £1 6s 9d; medium. £1 4s to £1 5s 9d; light, £1 Is to £1 3s 6d; smaller, 17s to £1 0s 9d; small and unfinished, 15s to 16s 9d; prime maiden ewes, 18s to £1 2s 6d; heavy prime ewes, ■ 16s to 17s 6d; medium, 14s 9d to 15s ,9d; light, 12s 3d to 14s 6d; inferiorly fatted, 6s 6d to 9s 6d; just killable, 10s to 12s; very poor, 2s to 6s; prime noggets, heavy, £1 2s to £1 ss; medium, 19s 6d to £1 Is 6d; light, 16s 6d to 19s; unfinished, 10s to 16s. Lambs.—Spring lambs in average numbers sold readily at values about the same as last week. Heavy prime lambs, £1 5s to £1 6s 9d; medium. £1 3s to £1 4s 9d; light, £1 to £1 2s 6d; unfinished, 15s to 19s 6d. Pigs.—We had a large yarding. There was a steady demand, with values on a par with last week’s quotations. Choppers, £1 to £3 Bs, heavy and medium baconers, £3 12s to £4 6s; light baconers and heavy porkers, £3 3s to £3 10s; medium and light porkers, £2 10s to £3; small, £2 to £2 Bs. Store pigs sold at late quotations. Large stores, £2 to £2 6s; slips, £1 8s to £1 18s; weaners, 14s to £1 6s; sows with litters, £5 10s to £8 10s. Calves.—Our entry was a large one. More small calves are coming forward. There was a steady sale, but values were easier. Runners, £4 : 10s to £9 10s; heavy vealers, £5 to £6 ss; medium, £4 5s to £4 17s; light, £3 10s to £4 2s; smaller, £2 10s to £3 8s; small, £1 10s to £2 8s; rough calves, 15s to £1 10s; fresh dropped, 7s to £1 Bs. Alfred Buckland and Sons Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, reports:— Beef.—We penned fat cattle to the number of 304 head, as against 305 head last week, comprising 114 steers and 190 cows and heifers. The quality of ox beef penned was first class. Bidding was not so keen and prices were easier by about 3s to 4s per 1001 b. Cows and heifers were not so keenly sought after and they also eased in value. Extra choice ox, £1 18s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, £1 15s to £1 17s; secondary and plain, £1 13s to £1 14s; prime young cow and heifer beef, £1 14s to £1 16s; ordinary cow beef, £1 7s to £1 11s; extra heavy prime steers, £l4 to £ls ss, for steers from Mr Ben Reed, Waerenga, and Mr C. Lambs.—Lambs were penned to the number of 301 and a good sale resulted at values slightly lower than last week. Extra heavy prime lambs, i £1 6s to £1 7s 3d; heavy, £1 4s 6d to £1 5s 6d; lighter, £1 2s 6d to £1 3s Gd; light, £1 Is to £1 2s; small and plain lambs, 15s to £l. Calves.—We had an extra large yarding, the majority being plain and unfinished. Good quality runners and prime vealers were easier in value, while plain and unfinished calves dropped considerably and were very hard to dispose of. Heavy prime runners, £6 10s to £9 ss, the latter price realised for an outstanding Shorthorn heifer from Mr Robert Hall, Wiri; light and unfinished, £3 to £5 2s 6d; heavy prime vealers, £5 10s to £6 9s; medium, £4 4s to £5 4s; light, £3 8s to £3 18s; smaller, £2 18s to £3 ss; small, 18s to £2 15s; rough calves, 16s to £1 8s; bobby calves, 5s to 16s. A total of 310 calves was sold. Pigs.—'fhere was an increased entry, and an improvement in values for baconers. Porkers sold readily at late quotations. Choppers made £2 to £4 ss; heavy prime baconers, £4 3s to £4 9s; medium, £3 15s to £3 19s; light, £3 8s to £3 12s; heavy porkers, £2 18s to £3 3s; medium, £2 12s to £2 16s; light, £2 7s to £2 9s; small and unfinished, £2 to £2 ss; stores, £1 14s to £2 4s; slips, £1 6s to £1 12s; weaners, 18s to £1 6s. Baconers sold from 6id to G£d per lb., and porkers made 6£d to 7|d per lb. A total of 707 pigs was sold.
