FISHING AT ROTORUA
LAKE OK AT AIN A POPULAR 13LB TROUT LANDED According to reports from rangers 127 trout had been taken from Lake Okataina up to Monday, this lake proving the most popular water in the Rotorua area since the opening day last Wednesday. The heaviest catch to date was a fish weighing 131 b.
Of the successful anglers, Mr A. Bunyard, of Hamilton, took nine fish and Messrs B. B. Gleeson and F. Powell, of Rotorua, secured limits on the opening day, the 20 fish aggregating 1201 b. Mr A. Samuel, of Auckland, took six in part of a day’s fishing, while Mr and Mrs Hodson, ot' Auckland, who were camped there for several days, finished with a total of 35, all taken on the fly. Two other local anglers, Messrs H. Richards and A. Mitchell, took 14 in one day. Another lake which has fished well for the beginning of the season is Rerewhakaitu, where Mr H. Lewer, of Hamilton, and three other rods took 27 fish last Saturday and Sunday, the largest being about 51b.
At Rotoehu a party of three fly fishing took 20 on the opening day.
Strong westerly winds have made fishing in many parts of Lake Rotorua difficult, but trollers have done fairly well off Kawaha Point. Anglers fly fishing in the Utuhina and Ngongotaha Streams have found conditions fairly good and several limits have been reported. So far there have not been many anglers about at Lake Tarawera, where fish of up to 81b in a bag of 15 were taken on the opening day.
