BISHOP’S TOUR

TE AWAMUTU ADDRESSES (Special to Times) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday The Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, visited Te Awamutu last week-end. On Sunday evening His Lordship preached at St. John’s Church to a large congregation. He related his experiences as New Zealand delegate at the world missionary congress held at Madras, India, at which 500 delegates representing 70 nations, were present. Eminent visitors included Dr. Koo, of China, and Dr. Kagawa, of Japan. The Bishop stressed the urgency of effective Christian action to counter the paganism and materialism which was rampant in the world. He pointed out that only 3 per cent of the adult population of New Zealand from all denominations attended church services. On Saturday Bishop Bennett, accompanied by the vicar and Mrs Sullivan, Mr H. A. Swarbrick (vicar’s warden) and Mr G. Rust (native school-teacher at Parawera) visited a number of Maori homes. In the evening His Lordship gave a lantern lecture in Maori to some 70 Maoris in the meeting house at Parawera.
