CARRIERS MEET

LICENSING IN HAMILTON SOME ELIMINATION LIKELY The annual general meeting of the Hamilton Master Carriers’ Association was held last night, when more than 30 members were present. The president, Mr H. R. Bishop, in his annual report referred to the activities of the association during the past year, mentioning that in the circumstances the association was to be congratulated on completing the year with a credit balance. The election of officers for the year resulted as follows: President, Mr H. R. Bishop; vice-president, Mr E. R. Davey; executive, Messrs J. Taylor. D. Mathieson, H. W. Brant and E. W. Hopkinson; trustees, Messrs C. V. Nicklin and G. O. Murphy; auditor, Mr J. Taylor. Compulsory Licensing Considerable discussion took place on the compulsory licensing, under k the Transport Act, of all town carL riers. It was stated that some of those now “plying for hire” with ■ Hamilton Borough Council licenses ■ were likely to be eliminated by the M Government Licensing Authority on r the advice of carriers, who already held the Government transport licenses, and who were engaged in country work, carting cream and the like. It was mentioned that Hamilton was the only place in New Zealand where temporary licenses had not been available to those town carriers who were calle ’ upon by customers to deliver goods outside Hamilton. Consequently the operations of town carriers had already been curtailed bv the action of country carriers. Mr Bishop agreed with members that town carriers, some of whom had been operating in Hamilton for just on 30 years, should automatically be entitled to transport licenses, provided the operators were financially sound to carry on this service. It was finally agreed to appoint a small committee to discuss the position witn the Licensed Carriers’ Association. Messrs Bishop Mathieson and Murphy were appointed.
