FURTHER DECLINE

VALUES FOR BEEF SLACK FRANKTON MARKET FAT EWES ALSO CHEAPER The market was again slack for beef at Frankton yesterday and a further decline in values W T as recorded. Competition was often tedious in the fat sheep section, and ewes were often cheaper by 2s to 3s per head. Fat pigs, which were yarded in the largest numbers this season, were fully firm.

The entry of steers was a heavy one for this time of the year, the supply being altogether too large for the demand. Heavy steers sold from £l2 17s 6d to £l3 5s per head in comparison with £l3 9s to £l4 5s last week, all classes being approximately £1 a head lower. The quality was fair but hardly as good as previous weeks. Cows and heifers showed no improvement and while top-quality offerings were firm in some cases, others were often close on £1 a head cheaper. Best descriptions were quoted from £9 15s to £lO 10s, but actually sales above the former figure were limited. The entry included a larger proportion of light and small sorts, which generally made from £4 8s to £5 17s 6d. Quite good meaty sorts yesterday were auctioned from £6 10s to £B. Sheep and Pigs Enthusiasm was altogether lacking in the fat sheep market and the sale was the dullest experienced for some months. Sheep in the wool were confined to just a few pens. Ewes suffered most by the weak demand, all classes being by 2s to 3s a head cheaper. One good line of 40 sold at 17s 9d, but the usual range for good sorts was 13s 9d to 16s 6d, with comparatively few pens selling above 14s 3d. From 16s 6d to 19s 6d was given for fat ewes in the wool. It was more difficult to gauge the strength of the wether marKet as there was considerable variation in quality and it was not easy to compare prices with those of last week. While in not a few cases values were distinctly lower, there were other instances where there was no noticeable alteration. The majority of the pens made from 20s to 22s 9d, with top-quality descriptions changing hands from 23s 6d to 25s 9d.

Despite the large entry, fat pigs sold freely at late rates with baconers being quoted from 65s to 82s and porkers from 40s to 60s. At times values were rather variable and some vendors received slightly less than last week, while others obtained a shade more. Store pigs were also forward in extra large numbers, with the result that values were usually lower than last week. Price Summary The following table is a summary of prices realised for fat stock at the Frankton yards during the past fortnight:—

Individual Consignments For the four best steers from Mr J. A. Gower, of Gordonton, buyers paid £l3 ss, and for others from the same vendor gave £l2 17s 6d to £l3 2s 6d. Four from Messrs.
