CATHOLIC CONGRESS

HISTORICAL COMMITTEE A national historical committee has been set up in connection with the National Eucharistic Congress, to be held in Wellington from February 1 to 4 next, to provide such historical information as may be necessary in preparation for the congress. The patrons of the national historical committee are the Archbishop and Bishops of New Zealand. The general committee, which is representative of the dioceses and links the Catholics of today with the pioneer Catholics of the early days of Catholicity in New Zealand, while at the same time utilising the services of living expert historians, includes as representatives of pioneer Catholics, Mr James Armstrong (Nelsoa), Sir Walter Clifford, Bart., Mr James Martin (Lower Hutt), Mr Bernard F. Petre, Mr Hamilton Redwood, Mr D. D. Riddiford (representing the Grace and Johnstone families), Mr Harold Vavasour, and Mr Everard Weld. The Hon. Mr Justice Callan, the Hon. Mr Justice O’Regan, Mr P. D. Hoskins, K.S.G., and the Hon. Vincent Ward, M.L.C., are representatives of leading figures in Catholic life over the middle period. The Rev. A. Venning, S.M., and the Hon Rangi Mawhete, M.L.C., represent the Native race, and each religious order in New Zealand has its representative. His Lordship Bishop Liston, Professor James Hight. Mother M. St. Domitille, D.Litt., Rev. D. V Silk, the Rev. P. McKeefry, and the Rev. F. Finlay contribute the wealth of their historical research te the committee. The work of the committee is undertaken by an executive committee, which has its headquarter* in Wellington. The members of this committee include Mr J. A. Allen (Blenheim), Rev. Rev K. 1 McGrath, S.M (chairman), Mr A. C O'Connor, LL.B., Dr Rolland O’Regan, F.R.C.S., Mr J. W. M Smith, Rev. F. H. Walsh. D.D., and the Rev A. Venning. S.M The hon secretary is Mr F. J.
