OBITUARY
MR E. J. CARSELDINE (Special to Times.) TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday The death of Mr Eli James Carseldine, formerly of Waharoa and lately of Puru Bay, occurred at the residence of his son, Mr Hector John Carseldine, College Street, Te Awamutu, yesterday after an illness of several weeks. The late Mr Carseldine was bom at Gregorsford, Upper Cabulture, Queensland, on November 6, 1868, exactly 71 years before his death. He was the third son of the late Mr Jonathan Carseldine, who was among the earliest settlers of Queensland, having left the South of England over 90 years ago. The late Mr Carseldine spent his early days on his parents’ farm and, when old enough, joined the Royal Queensland Artillery. After spending some years in the force, the young man married Miss Helen Wilson, eldest daughter of John Spence Veitch, of Edinburgh. He then took up a block of virgin bush country in the Kolcoy District, Queensland. In 1903 he sailed for New Zealand with his wife and six children, anc. joined the staff of the Railway Department, serving mainly in the Taranaki district. After seven an.-i a-half years’ service, he took up farming in the Te Wera district some miles inland on the Stratford-Main Trunk railway. Mr Carseldine later took up a property at Waharoa, arm four years ago he retired to live a Puru Bay. The late Mr Carseldine always took an interest in local affairs and served on school and other committees.
He is survived by his widow, six sons and three daughters. The childhen are Messrs Robert Eli Carseldine (Waharoa), Archibald James Carseldine (Waharoa), Hector John Carseldine (Te Awamutu), Gordon Murray Carseldine (Hinuera), John Spence Carseldine (Sentry Hill, Taranaki), Alex Spence Carseldine (Mokai) and Mesdames George Sharman (Whangarei), John Davidson (Tarikl) and Frederick Stockley (Kiore). Mr Hector Carseldine was a member of the police staff at Hamilton for 11 years. There are 16 grandchildren.
