RACE WITHOUT PRECEDENT
RIDERLESS HORSE FIRST HOME RIVETTE’S GOOD PERFORMANCE CATALOGUE BADLY CHECKED ilinlim press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copvrlsni) (Received Nov. 8, 11.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 8 The Sydney Morning Herald’s Melbourne correspondent says the 1939 Melbourne Cup was without precedent in the varied history of the race. For the first time a riderless horse, Ortelle’s Star, led the field past the post; Rivette became’ the first mare to win both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups in one season, and the finish was almost a repetition of the Caulfield Cup as Respirator, who finished third in the Caulfield Cup to Rivette and Maikai, finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup. Rivette’s was a gallant performance. She took the lead about one and a-half furlongs from the winning post and was nicely clear when Maikai made his run. For a few strides it seemed that Maikai might catch her but Rivette refused to tire and outstayed Maikai in the last half furlong. There were no “ifs” in the finish and an excuse could be made for only one horse, Catalogue, who appeared to run into trouble in the straight. He was badly checked and was going well enough at the time to suggest he might have held a prominent position in the finish. Rivette was offered for sale some months ago by Mr H. Bamber, who is the breeder, owner and trainer of the mare, for 300gns.
