GOLDEN WEDDING
MR AND MRS A. T. SCRIVENER Recollections of 50 years of married life were narrated by Mr A. T. Scrivener, of Tauranga, and formerly of Morrinsville, in replying to felicitations extended to him and his wife on the occasion of the golden anniversary of their wedding. There was a large attendance at the ceremony, which was held at Okauia Springs. In his speech Mr Scrivener said that he and his wife were married at the Methodist Church, Midhurst, by the Rev. J. T. Pinfold, formerly of Hamilton, on October 29, 1889. Mr Scrivener referred to the changes he and Mrs Scrivener had witnessed during the last 50 years, particularly in the sphere of transport. After their wedding he and his wife travelled to their new home on horse-back. Twenty-five years were to pass before they gould possess a motor-car. A start was made by the newly-married couple in developing a 100-acre bush farm on which a few cows were kept. The milk was kept in a pan, the cream skimmed off the top, and the butter made was bartered with the local. I storekeeper in exchange for goods. The prices for the butter ranged from 4d to 6d per lb. Mr Scrivener described the development of the factory system of butter-making and the improved conditions that were brought about on the farm. He also referred to the ease with which /the work in the house could now be done with the aid of modern electrical appliances compared with the heavy labour that was involved two generations L.gO. Mr and Mrs Scrivener have two sons and three daughters, 22 grandchildren, and four great-grandchild-ren. Colonel C. G. Fitness, manager of the Salvation Army’s Boys’ Farm, was among those present at the golden wedding ceremony, the attendance totalling over 60, including all the descendants except one grandchild.
