FARMERS’ NEEDS

REASONABLE RETURN EAST TAMIKI REQUEST (By Telegraph.—Press Association) AUCKLAND, Tuesday The need for united and determined action by farmers against the Government’s policy in relation to primary industry was expressed by several speakers at the annual meeting of the East Tamiki branch of the New Zealand Farmers Union in the East Tamiki Public Hall on Monday night. Suggestions for combating the trend of legislation were advanced, and it was decided to circularise all dairy factories in the Dominion with a view to ascertaining the extent of possible united action. The following resolution was adopted unanimously:—“That, in the opinion of this meeting, if production is to be maintained, it must not only be possible to sustain the costs of production, but to sustain them with a reasonable margin of profit; that increased production is largely dependent upon capital expenditure, and to be assured of capital expenditure there must be security of investment with reasonable interest “We therefore request: That the prices of primary produce are sufficient to cover costs of production as assessed from time to time by an independent tribunal having the confidence of the industry; that adequate efficient labour is available; that the disposal of post-war production surpluses is provided for in such a way that no detriment is caused to individuals engaged in the industry.”
