ROAD BEAUTIFICATION

NEW COASTAL ROUTE PLANS FOR 120,000 TREES (By Tel^irapTi.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Tuesday If present plans are completed the new Paekakariki coastal road will be one of the most beautiful marine drives in the world. It was announced at the official opening on Saturday by the president of the Wellington Beautifying Society, Captain S. Holm, that his society planned to provide 30.000 plants annually—pohutukawas and others—for the next four years to beautify the route. In a comparatively short time motorists would be travelling on a magnificent roadway through beautiful native bush. Highway beautification had become a popular feature throughout the world and New Zealand must not lag behind, he said. In the Minister of Public Works. Mr Semple, and his officers, the society had sympathetic co-workers, and much of the land adjoining the new road would be closely planted with New Zealand trees soon. The Minister said that the society had been taking an active part in beautifying the road. A start was made last year by the planting of 1000 trees near Tawatapu Camp, but the rest of the programme would be carried out this year, when formation was further advanced.
