Raised to a Legation It is officially announced in Dublin that the Swiss Consulate-General in Dublin has been raised to a legation. Mataki Gold Mataki Gold Dredging Ltd advise that the telegraphed return for the week ended November 3 was 23 ounces for 135 hours’ work and 11,800 yards. Westland Breweries Profit A net profit of £11,876, against £9983 in 1938 and £8446 in 1937, is shown in the accounts of Westland Breweries, Limited, for the year ended June 30. A dividend of 10 per cent is proposed. Heavy Taxation Provision The net profit of Woolworths (N.Z.), Limited, for the year ended October 2, of £1L6,866, was struck after making provision for income tax of £168,500. In the previous year net profit was £125,212 after setting aside £98,000 for taxation. Camp Work The Waikato Presbytery, at its meeting this morning, expressed approval of the action of the assembly committee in co-operating with the work of the Y.M.C.A. in the military camps, rather than undertaking separate effort. Life in India Experiences in India of the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett, Bishop of Aotearoa, will be described at a lantern lecture in the Winter Show Hall tonight, when the bishop will give an address. The lecture is to augment the funds for the St. Aidan’s annual missionary festival. Home-Made Bomb An explosion caused injuries to a 14-year-old boy, Harry North, of Kokopu. The boy was apparently trying to make a nome-made bomb. He had a cylinder full of gun powder, which, coming in contact with fire, exploded. Injuries were caused to the boy’s left leg. He was taken to the Whangarei Hospital. Church Opened The Rev. A. Marshal, at this morning’s meeting of the Waikato Presbytery, reported that the church at Mamaku was completed, opened and dedicated last month. At the opening service three infants were Baptised. The opening of the church completed an effort which was inaugurated about 19 years ago. Hamilton Rose Show. Entries for the Hamilton Horticultural Society’s rose show, which will be held in the Waikato Winter Show Hall on Thursday, will close tonight. Mr E. Hosking (Opaheke) has been appointed judge for the rose classes, and Mrs Dawson (Te A.wamutu) for the decorative classes. Farmers’ Mass Meeting The mass meeting movement among farmers has spread to Te Awamutu and a meeting will be held in the Empire Theatre on Thursday at 11 a.m. The meeting is called by the Te Awamutu branch of the Farmers’ Union, and speakers from the dairy industry and Sheepfarmers’ Federation will give addresses. Only Restricted Use The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, announced that the r.i ,v Plimmerton-Paekakariki deviation along the coast will be open to the public only on Saturdays and Sundays until the tar-sealing of the remaining stretch is completed. He estimates that, given fine weather, this part of the job should be finished in about three weeks. Earnings Rise Sharply A net profit of £9613 is reported by the Bruce Woollen Manufacturing Company, Limited, Dunedin, for the year ended September 19. This compares with £ll9 in the previous year, £3154 in 1937, and £5872 in 1936. An ordinary dividend of 5 per cent is recommended, the first since 1936, when 3 per cent was distributed. Unhappy History The unhappy history of Poland was the subject of a lecture given by the Rev. Brother Remigius at the monthly meeting of Catholic men in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall last night. The Rev. Father Bleakley presided over a good attendance. The many invasions suffered by Poland in the past were traced by the speaker, who showed how in the last few weeks history had repeated itself in many instances. They Like New Zealand Chatting to a representative of the Waikato Times, last night members of the “Charley’s Aunt” company expressed their pleasure at being in New Zealand, especially at this time of year, when everything is looking so beautiful. Mr Don Nicol has been here often before, and is finding it very pleasant renewing old friendships. Messrs John Fleeting and Lane Patterson are making their first visit, but said that they had heard so much of the charms of New Zealand from Mr Will Mahoney the well-known comedian, with whom Miss Shirley Richards and Mr Fleeting recently appeared in a film in Australia, that they were eager to come and are finding the country even exceeding expectations.
