GENERAL HERTZOG’S WARNING BONDS WITH BRITAIN PRIME MINISTER CRITICISED (United Press Assn.— Elec. TeL Copyrlgnt) CAPETOWN, Nov. 4 In announcing his leadership “reconsolidated Afrikanderdom,” General J. B. M. Hertzog said that General Smuts’ participation in the war had greatly contributed to the annihilation of all the bonds with Britain. General Hertzog named Dr C. F. Malan as his first lieutenant, and added that the decision of the English speaking members of Parliament to support General Smuts had severely affected relations between the English speaking and Afrikaans speaking sections of the community. As far as South Africa was concerned nothing could be more destructive to the maintenance of the Empire than her participation in the war, added General Hertzog. He warned General Smuts that unless South Africa w r as governed as an independent and free country her participation in the British Commonwealth would be of short duration.
