CHURCH CAMP WORK
ANGLICAN APPEAL £50,000 TO BE RAISED A part similar to that played by it in raising £50,000 to provide huts and equipment in New Zealand camps during the last war is to be undertaken by the Church of England, which has made an urgent appeal for funds. It intends to establish huts in all the main camps and in many of the smaller ones, to serve as bases for chaplains’ work as well as recreational centres. In its appeal, the military affairs committee of the Church points out that marquees have already been erected at the Hobsonville air base, Narrow Neck, Papakura, Ngaruawahia, Trentham and Burnham. The centres are under the management of the Church Army, and all the ministrations will be provided without charge for anything. The value of the work may be gauged from the fact that 200 men attended Holy Communion service in one of the huts on a recent Sunday. “The military affairs committee, a body constituted by General Synod for the purpose, urgently appeals to all Church of England people throughout New Zealand to provide the necessary funds to carry on this essential work in the name of the Church among the New Zealand forces,” the appeal continues. “This i fund will be raised and spent by the Church, as it comes within the exemptions allowed by the Government regulations. An opportunity to help will be given on Sunday, November 12, when retiring collections will be invited in all churches throughout New Zealand.” The committee includes the Primate of New Zealand, Archbishop Averill, and the bishops of the Church in other centres, in addition to representatives of the clergy and laity. The Rev. Canon D. B. Malcolm, of Wellington, is the secretary.
