BUTTER AND BACON

INTRODUCTION OF RATIONING PROBABLY IN MID-DECEMBER NEW ZEALAND SHIPMENTS (Omctal Wireless) (Received Nov. 6, 11 a.m.) RUGBY, Nov. 5 Although no definite date has been officially announced for the introduction of rationing of butter and bacon—the only two commodities which it has been considered necessary to ration in the near future—it has been announced to take place some time in mid-December. Recently the press suggested that rationing may be postponed until after Christmas. Informed quarters point out that the introduction of a rationing scheme for butter and bacon does not denote a permanent shortage of either commodity. The normal percentages of total imports from Denmark are bacon 50, butter 25. A temporary dislocation of supplies, due to the submarine campaign, occurred for a breif period at the end of September, but the convoy system now enables the resumption of shipments on a satisfactory scale and ample buttter from New Zealand and bacon from Canada are as« sured, the United Kingdom having first claim on all supplies of the former. The Red Cross and St. John Fund of the Lord Mayor of London for sick and wounded in the war has reached £600,000.
