MARGIN OF SIX RUNS

CLAUDELANDS DEFEATED EAST BOWLERS TOO STRONG When only three Claudelands wickets had fallen for 152 runs it seemed certain the side would be victorious over Hamilton East on the first innings. However, the excellent beginning was not maintained and when the last wicket fell the total was 180, six runs short of the team’s objective. East declared its first innings closed at 186 for seven and Claudelands had first use of the excellent batting wicket on the second day. T. Lyon and Cassells were associated in a great opening partnership, which yielded 92 before Cassells was caught, after giving a polished exhibition. Lyon and Ewan were together when the century mark was passed. Neither troubled with the attack and Lyon particularly punished the bowling severely, his runs coming mainly from perfectly timed leg shots. After reaching 20 he was particularly aggressive and twice he found the leg boundary on the full. Apart from the fact that he was dropped by Going, who attempted a hot catch, Lyon made no mistakes and his dismissal shortly after reaching his half-century was one of the surprises of the day. Claudelands’ Collapse With the dismissal of Ewan, who had plodded along confidently, there were no batsmen to follow capable of bringing the innings to a successful conclusion and what had promised to be a worthy stand by the Claudelands team developed into a quick procession of dismissals. H. Lyon made a gallant attempt to amend the position but the strong attack of Going and Cassidy proved too big a hurdle for the rest of the team and the last wicket fell with the total at 180. Throughout the match Claudelands was handicapped by the fact that the team was not sufficiently well balanced. On the field the side displayed an excellent spirit, in spite of difficulties, but, being sadly lacking in bowlers, could not introduce variety into the attack. The team’s batting failure indicated its shortage of reliable run-getters, four men shouldering the burden of contributing three parts of the score. On the other hand East possesses the pick of the players in the senior grade. Every member of the team is capable of providing a handsome contribution to the side’s aggregate, while the majority of them can send down a useful ball. Deadly Attack East tried out six bowlers in the course of the day, but Going and Cassidy, with four kickets each, caused most of the damage. Experience was the telling factor judging by the way the younger Claudelands batsmen lost their wickets. Details:— HAMILTON EAST—First Innings, , 186 for seven (dec.) Second Innings T.
