FLEMINGTON RACING
VICTORIA DERBY WON READING LEADS THROUGHOUT BROADCASTER MAKES AMENDS VICTORY FOR CATALOGUE (United Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright, . MELBOURNE, Nov. 5 Although the weather was dull and threatening with rain near the end, there was a good attendance on the opening day or the Victoria Racing Club’s spring meeting at Flemington yesterday. The Wakefield Stakes provided a very exciting finish, Snow White recording a good performance to win in the last stride. Riviera finished well, but Dreamsome had every chance. Broadcaster made amends for his recent failures by winning the Maribyrnong Plate He registered an excellent effort, as he was slow to begin. Halifax did well to gain second arter beginning from an outside barrier position. Goldsmith had every chance Happy Bay held a good lead early, but weakened near the end Trueness, who finished fifth, was not disgraced. Broadcaster cost 4 5 ogns as a yearling. MacKinnon Stakes Upset By leading practically throughout, Ortelle’s star upset calculations in the L. K. S. .MacKinnon Stakes, hut the race was spoilt by the muddling pace early. Feminist was second most or tne way, but she bad no chance with the winner over the concluding stages. Respirator and Mosaic finished well without ever looking dangerous. Mosaic disappointed his Melbourne Cup admirers, but he was not suited by the way in which the race was run. He is likely to do better in the Melbourne Cup, in which the pace is likely he more solid throughout. Taking the leaa a rurlong and a-half arter the start, Reading never surrendered ols advantage in the Victoria Derby High Caste issued a determined challenge In the straight and, although he gained ground, he never looked liking beating Reading. Dashing Cavalier, who was second most of the way, surprised by I staying on ror third. Beau Vite and Wilson, who were nearest the placed horses, struggled on gamely without ever appearing dangerous Gold Salute was a great disappointment and finished last. The Jockey D. Munro had previously won the Victoria Derby on Hall Mark and Nuffield. Reading is the seventh colt In the last 10 years to have won both the Australian Jockey Club Derby and the Victoria Derby Can tala Stakes to Manrico Manrico led over the last seven furlongs to score a comfortable win in the Cantala Stakes. His record is now five wins and a third in his last six starts. Landlaw made a game bid, but he had little chance or overhauling the winner. Carpentier was a moderate third. Arter being troublesome at the start, Te Hero began fairly well, but he was never dangerous. Croilck shaped poorly. The race was won - in heavy rain, and Manrico did exceptionally well to record 1.37} Tor the mile. The New Zealand gelding Catalogue outclassed his rivals in the Hotham Handicap, after leading practically throughout. He enhanced his prospects for his second success in the Melbourne Cup Pantler and Bell Buoy finished well, hut had no hope with the winner. Netherlea and The Trump went poor races. Copyright) MELBOURNE, Nov. 5 The trainer T. George has not given up hope or success with Beau Vite In the Melbourne Cup. He states that the coJt was interfered with at a critical stage of the Victoria Derby and finished gamely. Beau Vite should also appreciate the drop in weight. The connections or Catalogue are sanguine or success in the Melbourne Cup. Catalogue looks better than when he won last year and there is a possibility that heavy guiug will enhance his chances.
