RETURNING HOME

ATHENIA, SURVIVORS (Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Monday Advice has been reecived that Mr and Mrs C. E. Tomlinson, of Remuera, who were among the passengers on the torpedoed liner Athenia, will arrive at Auckland from the United States this month. Mr Tomlinson, who is a director of Motor Specialties, Limited, Anzac Avenue, left New Zealand with his wife in February on an extended business and holiday tour. Letters received from Mr Tomlinson stated that for 10 days after the sinking he did not know whether his wife was saved. He knew that one of the lifeboats from the sinking liner had been smashed by a propeller of the American steamer City of Flint, | one of the rescue ships, and, as he i did not know in which boat Mrs Tomlinson was seated, his fears were not allayed until advice had been received that she had reached North America in the City of Flint. The American steamer, built for cargo work, carried a large number of survivors, and considerable hardships were suffered by passengers on the crossing. Mr Tomlinson had another escape i when making a second crossing of I the Atlantic to Canada. The British ! liner in which he was travelling en--1 countered a German submarine, but was able to continue ynharmed.
