LACK OF ORDERS
MINERS DISMISSED MINISTER WILL FIND WORK (Special to Times) GREYMOUTH, Friday For the past three months the Paparoa mine has been experiencing a lean period due to lack of orders and the management has served notice of dismissal on 46 members of its staff, the notices to take effect from November 17. About 100 men are employed at the mine. Most of the men affected are single. After receiving a deputation while visiting the West Coast this week the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, gave an assurance that he would find work for all men whom it was necessary to dismiss. He said that some men would be placed on the Buffer railway and others in South Westland. It was expected that the men remaining in the employ of the company will be able to work fulltime, but the management stated today that there was no indication as to when the present total number of miners would be employed again. Ii the Onekaka iron works were proceeded with and started production there would be a much increased demand for Paparoa coal, but it is considered that this work will not be pushed ahead until world conditions become more settled.
