Children’s Verses
RIGHT BOTH WAYS A mousie had a big, big pain; He went to Dr. Puff; Who said “ of food ’tis very plain, You have not had enough! ” “ Oh, no, indeed! ” the mousie cried, “ I’ve eaten such and such.” “ ’Tis clear,” the doctor then replied, “ That you have had tooo much! ” (Copied.—Sent by Valda Lee.) THE WOOD The garden is gay, With blossoms red and white, And sweet-smelling stocks And marigolds bright; But down in the wood Is where I would stray On a hot summer’s day. THE SPARROW I am only a little sparrow, A bird of low degree; My life is of little value, yet There is one who cares for me. He gave me a coat of feathers; It is very plain, I know, With never a speck of crimson, For it was not made for show. It keeps me warm in winter And shields me from the rain; Were it bordered with gold or purple, Perhaps, it would make me vain. If my meal is sometimes scanty, Close picking makes it sweet, I have always enough to feed me, I know there are many sparrows All over the world we are found, But our Heavenly Father knoweth When one of us falls to the ground. CHILDREN OF THE EMPIRE Though from England you may wander, Though you make your home out yonder, Still you’ll find you’re fonder Of the islands overseas. You may leave her far behind you, But memories will remind you Of all the ties that bind you In wartime or in peace. As in war you stand beside her, And in peace you come to guide her, From your heart you can’t divide her, You are here for evermore. So your strength and power enfold her, And your ways of progress mould her, Till the future shall behold her, Even mightier than of yore.
