MASQUERADE BALL

N.Z. LABOUR PARTY To commemorate the inauguration of the 40-hour week, a masquerade ball under the auspices of the Women’s Auxiliary Frankton Junction branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, was held on Thursday night in the Frankton Town Hall. The decorations were in the form of original slogans dealing with the 40-hour week, which were arranged round the hall, each slogan being framed in greenery. The judges for the posters and fancy dresses were Dr. S. de la Mare and Mr R. Coulter, Mayor of Te Aroha. Prizes were awarded as follows: —Poster: Miss Wynn Gilbert, “Hands Off ths- 40-hour.” Most original: lady, Miss S. Tomich as “Minnie Mouse”; men, Mr A. R. Lewies as “Pop Eye.” Modem: lady, Miss Jean Mitchell; men, Private Lomas. Modem and old-time dance music was supplied by Clayton’s Orchestra, extras being given by Mrs J. L. Olds and Mr Fawcett. Mr T. Skittrup officiated as master of ceremonies. A very enjoyable evening was brought to a close with a confetti and streamer dance. The committee was as follows: Mesdames Hawkins (patroness), A. McLaren (president), T. Skittrup and M. Ahem (joint secretaries), F. Sutherland, J. Eastwell, W. J. Waters, A. Gillespie, P. E. Mills, C. J. Champness, Hunter and Gluckman.
