WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

SUMMER SCHOOL WORKERS EDUCATIONAL ASSN. The fourteenth summer school of the Workers’ Educational Association (Auckland University District) will be held at Wesley College, Paerata, from Tuesday, December 26, 1939 to Tuesday, January 2, 1940 (inclusive). The courses will cover “Social Democracy in New Zealand,” given by Dr. W. B. Sutch, Economic Secretary to the Minister of Finance, Mr H. D. Innes, Investigating Officer for the Internal Market Department and Mr S. Leathern, of Auckland, “The Arts in New Zealand,” with lectures by Mr F. Sargeson, Mr R. A. K. Mason, Mr A. M. Chisholm and Mr A. C. Hipwell, “International Affairs,” lecturer, Professor J. Stone, and “Music” with lectures and recitals by Owen Jensen. Applications to attend must be forwarded to the Director, W.E.A., Old Grammar School, Symonds Street, Auckland C. 1., not later than November 15. AT NGARUAWAHIA The October meeting of the Ngaruawahia branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Returned Soldiers’ Hall recently. Mrs Loughnan was appointed delegate to the biennial meeting at Huntly on October 30. A message of sympathy is to be sent to the secretary of the Glen Afton Institute. Mrs Benneit won a competition and Mrs Allwill won the wood-pulp flower competition. Some of the members present offered to help canvass for the health stamp campaign. The competition for November is to be an article suitable for a Christmas gift, costing not more than 2s. Mrs S. R. Cox, Te Kowhai, is to be asked to demonstrate wreath and bouquet making. Mesdames B. Johnston and W. Bennett were the hostesses for the afternoon. AT OTOROHANGA Mrs A. A. Smith presided over the monthly meeting of the Otorohanga Women’s Institute, when there was a good attendance. The president, who had attended the biennial council meeting at Taumarunui, sumbitted a report, for which she was accorded a vote of thanks. A good response was made to the appeal for the lepers’ Christmas funds, many useful articles being donated. A musical game provided amusement for all. Mesdames Green and Dalziel, judges for the date scones competition, awarded the prizes as follows: Mrs Church 1, Mrs Webster 2, Mrs Fraei 3. The hostesses, Mesdames Jagger and Duncan, served afternoon tea. TAUPIRI GROUP MEETING The Taupiri group meeting took place in the Whitikahu Hall recently. Members attended from Gordonton, Orini, Glen Massey, Taupiri and Ngaruawahia. Mrs Boyce occupied the chair and Mrs McDowell (Taupiri) was convener. Mrs McGaughran opened the meeting with a resume of Institute ambitions, and was presented with a beautiful bouquet. Several competitions caused much amusement. Luncheon was then served. In the afternoon, songs by Mrs S. Clarke, Taupiri, and Mrs McCallum, were much appreciated. Mrs A. Scott, Tenfoot, played pianoforte solos in an accomplished manner, and a witty and bright playette by two Taupiri members, Mesdames Foley and Cowley, caused much amusement. Mrs A. J. Smith, Taupiri, gave two enjoyable recitations. The beautiful silver vase was won by the Glen Massey Institute with Gordonton and Taupiri tying for second place. AT WARDVILLE There was a fair attendance at the October meeting of the Wardville Women’s Institute, when Mrs Schaare presided. The motto was, “Let us beware of small grievances, for it is the little foxes that spoil the vines.” Mrs Schaare, delegate to the biennial council meeting of the Waikato East Federation, held in Matamata, gave an interesting report. After a series of card parties the sum of £5 has been donated to the Matamata branch of the Plunket Society. Competitions were won as follows:—Best laundered shirt, Mrs Hughes; Madeira cake, Mrs Hughes; best flower, Mrs Kilpin l f Mrs Hughes 2. Mrs Newson was the winner of a box of chocolates. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs Sheat and Mrs Kilpin. Husbands’ Evening The Wardville Women’s Institute held a husbands’ evening on October 24 which was a great success. The following items were rendered by members of the Institute:—Song and dance, Mesdames R. Newson, A. Schaare, G. Kilpin, Smith, Misses Lockyer and Jagger; play, Miss Lockyer, Mesdames Wallace, Hollis, and Keane; toasts, Mesdames Schaare, Smith, Hollis, Newson, Wallace, Kilpin, and Miss Gillard; duet with ukulele accompaniment, Mesdames Schaare and Smith. A novelty dance was won by Miss M. Jullian and Mr Faulkon. AT TE KAWA i The November meeting of the Te Kawa Women's Institute was held in the hall recently, Miss Alderson presiding over a good attendance. The roll-call was “uses for rubber bands.” Great interest was shown by the members in a demonstra-

tion of “wired posies” given by Miss Broadbent. The competitions resulted as follows: Bouquet of wild flowers, Miss E. Alderson 1, Mrs T. Chestnut 2. Tea cosy, Mrs J. McLean 1, Mrs F. Plowman 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Misses M. and P. McLean. AT NAWTON-ROTOK AURI There was a fair attendance of members at the November meeting of the Nawton-Rotokauri Women’s Institute. In the absence of the president, the chair was taken by the vice-president, Mrs Rollinson. Final arrangements were made for the annual flower show to be held on Saturday, December 2. Several members volunteered to visit the Infirmary at the Waikato Hospital on November 16. They will take afternoon tea for the inmates and are arranging for a concert programme. The results of the monthly competitions were as follows: Homemade toy, Mrs Sanders 1, Mrs Terry 2. Gingerbread, Mrs Sanders 1, Mrs Terry 2. An interesting and instructive demonstration of first-aid was given by Mesdames Scobie and Waite for which they were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses. AT TE HOE Mrs Thompson presided over the monthly meeting of the Te Hoe Women’s Institute. A report on the Northern Waikato Federation of Women’s Institute Council meeting was given by the delegate, Mrs C. N. Twining. The roll call, “My birthplace,” met with good response and the motto for the month was supplied by Mrs F. McKeon. Competition results were as follows:—Women’s Institute competitions, Mrs Cox 1, Mrs Brown 2; best bloom, Mrs D. Twining 1, Miss Barker 2; best dressed pig, Mrs Brown. A money box was presented by the Intitute to Mrs Connolly on behalf of her baby daughter, Loma. A demonstration of pattern cutting, which was greatly appreciated, was given by Miss Dunstan. The hostesses were Mesdames Laing and Barker and Miss Dunstan. AT KEREONE The monthly meeting of the Kereone Women’s Institute, held in the Kereone Hall recently, was well attended, the president, Mrs W. Davies, occupying the chair. Mrs Foster, of Morrinsville, gave an interesting demonstration on the best and quickest way of making an attractive box ottoman. A bring and buy sales table did an excellent business, the proceeds of which are to be forwarded to the Morrinsville branch of the Red Cross. It was decided that the Institute hold a cooking and flower show at the next meeting, open to all in the district who wished to exhibit. A competition for the best bowl of flowers was won by Mrs Crow, Mrs Cunningham being second and Mrs Days third. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Way, Wiseman, and Houston.
