MORRINSVILLE VALUES DULLER TONE FOR BEEF BRISK DEMAND FOR BACONERS In line with the slacker demand shown for fat stock at other sales in the Waikato during the past fortnight, there was a duller inquiry for most classes of fats at the Morrinsville sale yesterday, baconers providing the only exception. In some cases the difference was not very appreciable but in other instances the i drop was fairly marked. Store stock were similarly more difficult to sell. Choice quality entries were few in the beef section for which lighter supplies were forward. The small number of light steers on offei ,changed hands from £8 18s to £ll *4s, while the best entries in the cow and heifer beef section realised from £7 to £8 10s, the latter figure being obtained for a pen of heavy Polled Angus cows. Other meaty sorts were cleared from £5 10s to £6 10s, but the bulk of the entry sold from £3 10s to £4 15s. Fewer Store Cattle Store cattle were not offered in the same numbers as recent weeks, but the reduced supply failed to prove of any assistance to competition, which was generally slow, some of the entries failing to reach vendors’ reserves. There was little enthusiasm about the dairy cattle sale, although any entries close to profit sold well, usually making from £9 10s to £ll 10s. Fair quality descriptions were .traded from £7 to £8 10s, with a large number of sales from £5 to £6 10s. A small entry of fat sheep commanded fair competition, but values, if anything, were a shade lower than those of the previous sale. Fat wethers off the shears were auctioned from 22s to 24s 6d and light sorts at 19s 6d. Fat ewes were quoted from 18s to 20s 9d and light i?t sorts at 16s 9d. An extra heavy entry of fat pigs included a fair proporti m of baconers, which sold very firmly up to 80s Despite the size of the entry, values in some cases were just a little better, the fact that extra buyers were operating proving an advantage to vjirkfs. The famous tobacco-box formerly belonging to Sir Walter Raleigh is still in existence, and is now a museum piece, and, of course, extremely valuable on account of its history and associations. Fashioned of metal it is cylindrical in shape, seven inches high, thirteen inches in diameter, and the outside cover is of gilded leather. It holds about a pound of tobacco, tor, of course, Sir Walter loved his pipe. One wonders what his tobacco was like? Hot and strong, probably, and not in the least like our own "toasted,” which is neither hot nor strong, but cool, sweet and fragrant, and just about as pure and delicious as it can be. Comparatively harmless, too, owing to its nicotine being largely ellmin-. ated by toasting, so that over-in-dulgence won’t affect you. The genuine toasted brands are: Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Cavendish, Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold. They’re all good—so good in fact, that they’re being imitated. So the safest way when you buy is to ask for the brands named. The imitations are worthless.
